[Techdirt] The Telco Traffic Shaping Smokescreen (Dec 13 2005 20:43 GMT) - A couple weeks ago, we had the story about BellSouth saying it wanted to prioritize traffic and services from certain (paying) partners -- or just its own services. This wasn't a surprise, as the telcos have been leaning towards this for a while. While we had thought that any move in this direction would lead to public outcry and an FCC mandate for network neutrality, we hadn't counted on Kevin Martin being so willing to roll over for telcos. It's certainly not as clear any more what will happen. This morning there's lots of buzz about an article in the Boston Globe saying that telcos are lobbying for just this right, with Slashdot, Boing Boing and Broadband Reports all weighing in. |

AB1121-AB1121-AB1121! ("California Moratorium on Execution Act") (Dec 13 2005 20:43 GMT) - "Perhaps there was a time when Schwarzenegger might have at least delayed the death of Stanley Tookie Williams until the California Assembly could consider the merits of AB1121, which would impose a moratorium on capital punishment while a commission assesses whether its application in this state is "fair, just and accurate." The first hearing on that bill, authored by Assemblyman Paul Koretz, D-West Hollywood, is Jan. 10 -- one week before the next scheduled execution in California." - Editorial, SF Chon, 12/13/05 |

Let's look at improving some short-range matters: making sure we bring what we need on each trip, without wasted time or unnecessary anxiety. What we need, of course, is a packing list. To begin, I make a BIG list of everything I might want to take along on the kinds of trips I usually take. |

Ford hospitalized for tests (Dec 13 2005 20:42 GMT) - Former President Gerald Ford wasn’t eaten by wolves, nor was he chopped into little bits by the propeller of a commuter plane. But he was hospitalized for routine medical tests. Maybe Tom Brokaw coming out of the closet will have to wait for another day. One of the best Saturday Night Live sketches ever. |
