Radio-tagged boarding pass (Dec 13 2005 23:26 GMT) - OpTag is a radio-tagged boarding pass that aims to prevent delays by tracking passengers around the airport, and "is the joint brainchild of engineers at University College London,a Berkshire firm called Innovision,a group in France, another in Greece,an airport in Hungary and a few others",the Guardian reports."The idea is to attach a unique tag to each boarding pass as it is issued. The prototype tag radiates a very low power signal in the 5.8GHz band but it is enough to be picked up by a cell-based tracking system linked to high-resolution video monitoring cameras placed strategically to cover 360 degrees, and linked by an Ethernet network to an operator at a set of screens".Further,"its real value lies in working out how far from their departure gate the thirsty Mr Smith and the absent-minded Mr Jones are at the crucial moment. |

Is there really such a thing as Plaxo spam? (Dec 13 2005 23:25 GMT) - I’ve been noticing that spammers are a wily lot, always subverting any popular tool to their own nefarious (or just plain annoying) purpose. Indiana Jones and the Volcano (Dec 13 2005 23:25 GMT) - Experiencing a live volcano was on top of our agenda when my friend Rob and I visited the exotic land of Costa Rica. The plane touched down in the capital city of San Jose, and we headed for the car rental to pick up a 4x4 and a map to Mt. Arenal, the nearest active volcano. After an arduous drive through torrential rain, we finally arrived in a quiet village supposedly at the foot of a fire-belching monster. I say supposedly because it was so foggy, we weren't even sure a volcano existed. |

Who Actually Buys Stocks Based On Strangers Text Messaging Them? (Dec 13 2005 23:24 GMT) - Federal regulators are apparently so concerned about pump-and-dump spammers moving to text messages, that they've sent out a warning telling people that if you receive a text message from a complete stranger with a stock tip... it's probably not legit. This should bring up one huge question: who actually needed the SEC to tell them this? Are there really people who believe that a random text message spam on their mobile phone is actually providing them with a hot stock tip? |
