Published in the January 15, 2006 issue of CANCER (interscience. wiley. com/cancer-newsroom), a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the study reveals the (rate of) change in concentration of prostate specific antigen (PSA) over time--a calculation called PSA velocity--can be significantly affected by age, race, and diet, leading to falsely lower or elevated values and possible misinterpretation by doctors. More Uses for Botox Discovered (Dec 14 2005 05:00 GMT)

- While botulinum toxin A, or BTXA, is widely known for its use in dermatology and aesthetic medicine, a review article in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology explores the drug's other successful applications. BTXA is popularly used to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) or to diminish wrinkles, but it is also a highly effective natural substance that normalizes muscle activity and can be used to reduce pain and itch. Benefits of BTXA have been observed in treatment of hand eczema and is effective in blocking secretion of sweat, saliva and mucus in cases of Hailey-Hailey disease (a blistering disease usually treated by surgery or laser) among other ailments. In addition, "botulinum toxin A has important applications in proctology where it has become the most powerful non-surgical therapy for anal fissure," according to Uwe Wollina, author of the review. "The substance in the hands of the experienced doctor is safe, provides effective treatment of several complaints, and is capable of reducing the need for surgery in many cases.

Deafness is a Common After-effect of Chemotherapy (Dec 14 2005 05:00 GMT)

- By 14, Peter Johnson had survived brain cancer and a relapse of the disease in his shoulder. But it was treatment for the last tumor that would create his life's greatest challenges. Johnson, now 33, has suffered since 1986 from the effects of ototoxicity, a condition in which platinum-based chemotherapy drugs, such as carboplatin and the more common cisplatin, damage the tiny hair cells in the inner ear that vibrate in response to sound waves. This leads to progressive, irreversible hearing loss and reduced quality of life for patients. Despite surgery and intense radiation therapy to remove the brain tumor, Johnson says the hearing loss resulting from the chemotherapy for the shoulder tumor has been the most disabling.

Even More Good News about Low Doses of Aspirin (Dec 14 2005 05:00 GMT)

- For years, we have heard about the health benefits of taking low doses of aspirin - preventing everything from Alzheimer's disease to heart attacks and stroke. The news about aspirin just keeps getting better. In a study published in the Dec. 9 issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry, University of Pittsburgh researchers report that aspirin, combined with a promising new cancer therapy known as tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), can induce cancer cells previously resistant to TRAIL therapy to self-destruct. The investigators say that if these findings hold up in larger studies, aspirin could become a routine therapy for helping to prevent the recurrence of many aggressive cancers, such as prostate and colon cancers.
