DataBricks: Data Components for Mobile Groupware (Dec 14 2005 10:02 GMT) - This paper presents the DataBricks project approach for component-based groupware development. The project is focused on the analysis, design and implementation of system support services suitable for an easier development of groupware applications in particular those aimed at mobile users. The goals of the project are twofold. First, to devise a specialized component model and associated programming language, backed by an appropriate set of development and support tools. Second, to supply a distributed architecture and a set of standard communication and data-management basic components that can be refined and recursively composed. |

WebOutliner: A Web-Based Tool for Collaborative Space Programming and Design (Dec 14 2005 10:02 GMT) - This paper discusses a web-based tool that allows members of a design team to collaboratively specify a hierarchical spatial program for an architectural project. Given its object orientation, the represented artifacts have built-in data and methods that allow them to respond to user actions and manage their own sub-artifacts. Given that these components are hierarchical allows users to filter information, analyze and compare design parameters and aggregate hierarchical amounts in real-time. The software employs a three-tier object-oriented, web-based scheme for a richer representation of hierarchical artifacts coupled with a relational database for server-side storage. |

A Collaborative Electronic Laboratory Notebook (Dec 14 2005 10:02 GMT) - A secure, collaborative, web-based electronic notebook (EN) designed is developed to provide researchers and students with a means to record and share their primary research notes and data. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN) supports a variety of common multimedia formats and can easily be extended to allow entry and display of custom data types. Based on a combination of Java, JavaScript, and Perl, the ELN provides a hierarchical chapter/page structure for organizing entries and includes features such as search, automated email notification of new entries, and a programmatic interface for automated data submission. |

Transparent Latecomer Support for Web-Based Collaborative Learning Environments (Dec 14 2005 10:02 GMT) - In this paper the problems of synchronous collaboration of users in web-based learning environments are examined. It is a strong challenge to develop efficient synchronous groupware systems which provide transparent collaboration of existing applications whereas participants may start at different points in time. Existing collaboration systems either provide transparency or the accommodation of latecomers. A transparent support is developed for accommodating latecomers in collaborative environments which may be integrated in any Java-based system on the web. |

Dynamic Content and Offline Collaboration in Synchronous Groupware (Dec 14 2005 10:02 GMT) - With the proliferation of mobile computing devices one witnesses an increasing demand for applications supporting collaboration for wireless mobile devices, where the possibility of temporary losing the connection is considerable. This paper presents a novel framework that allows users to work offline and then to merge the local data with the global application state when the connection is reestablished. The algorithm is optimal with respect to the amount of data sent through the network and is completely transparent to the user. Two example applications are implemented, as Java applications on workstations and as Java spotlets on Palm Pilots, and used them to evaluate the system performance. |

NewWave Automates Supply Chain With Workflow (Dec 14 2005 10:02 GMT) - NewWave Technologies, Inc. is a full-service distributor for document imaging, automated data storage and CD/DVD duplication products. Automation of its supply chain enabled NewWave to absorb an 80-percent-growth rate over four years. Unlike processing orders for delivery, returns present a whole new level of complexity and NewWave's existing ERP system did not adequately address its needs. Working with BizTech, NewWave integrated Captaris Workflow with its TakeStock distribution management ERP solution - and the return is impressive: |

Qatar Islamic Bank Automates Internal Operations With Captaris Workflow (Dec 14 2005 10:02 GMT) - Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB) is a leading bank in the State of Qatar that conducts its operation in compliance with the banking and investment laws of Islamic Shari'a. QIB is currently implementing an ambitious project to upgrade its banking system, which will eventually include deploying 116 additional ATM machines and three electronic banking branches. QIB realised that in order to achieve a higher level of quality customer service, it needed to automate internal operations in a more efficient manner. After studying several workflow solutions, QIB decided that Captaris Workflow was the best fit for its needs. |

Ubiquitous Access for Collaborative Information System Using SVG (Dec 14 2005 10:02 GMT) - With advances in wireless networking and Moore's law driven advances in computing capabilities, collaborative systems are needed to explore the large volume of distributed resources and new styles of communication. To achieve the goal of collaborative service for users with heterogeneous devices, the system needs to consider not only the traditional design issues, but also the heterogeneity of user devices. This paper describes the system architecture of the Garnet collaborative system based on the event brokering system, Narada. It discusses the approaches to shared resources with W3C SVG along with initial performance results. |

A Collaborative Environment for Remote Experimentation (Dec 14 2005 10:01 GMT) - Embedded systems have become common place in industry and domestic electronics, resulting in the need for educational institutions to teach advanced embedded systems design. Experience in teaching engineering subjects has shown that a complementary approach combining theoretical and practical exercises is vital for effective learning. Increasingly, teaching institutions are offering remote access to distant laboratories as part of an overall e-learning strategy. However the majority of remote laboratories developed to date have suffered from a major deficiency, namely the provision of a web based environment that accurately recreates the experience of traditional campus based laboratories. This paper addresses these issues and presents a supported collaborative learning environment for remote experimentation. |

Taking Your PMO to the Next Step: The Office of the CIO (Dec 14 2005 10:01 GMT) - Project management offices (PMOs) have long been responsible for overseeing and developing project management expertise, but forward-thinking companies are now considering them for a new role: the office of the CIO. In addition to maintaining their existing responsibilities, these structures and the resources within them are becoming the business managers for the CIO by focusing on two areas: 1) creating an environment for IT and business to work together more collaboratively, and 2) serving as stewards of process management to streamline and improve IT's ability to deliver. While the notion of the office of the CIO (OCIO) is not new, adding in PMO expertise is a new element and a positive one. |
