Swiss government opts for Suse Linux in server upgrades (Dec 14 2005 16:53 GMT) - (InfoWorld) - The Swiss government will switch to Suse Linux on more than 300 public-sector servers as those systems are upgraded, an official confirmed Wednesday. The government currently uses Unix systems from IBM, Sun Microsystems, and Hewlett-Packard, plus various distributions of Linux, said Juerg Roemer, chief information officer for the Swiss Federal Administration. The decision to standardize on Suse Linux from Novell was made using World Trade Organization rules for public purchases, he said. Red Hat was short-listed but "at the end, Suse was a bit better," Roemer said. Cost was not a factor because prices were about the same from both vendors, he said. |

Love Fishing? Love Kamome. (Dec 14 2005 16:49 GMT) - Coden Japan developed a fishing boat of a very different kind. It is a remote-controlled boat, with GPS, radar and all. You hook your fishing line on Kamome and then direct it to the spot where the fish are swimming (using the color radar display). Find the hotspot, release the hook and start reeling them in. There are many more functions, such as LAN connectivity and analyzing shallow grounds, caves and other places that you cannot reach with a normal boat. |
