Intrusive marketing (Dec 14 2005 21:49 GMT) - I'm no expert on product placement, but the following sentence in a Times article on the EC's recent ruling on the technique jumped off the page: If products are embedded in shows they become impossible for viewers to avoid. Think about that for a minute. Impossible to avoid. I personally find it hard to accept that such intrusion is a way to market to someone, but maybe that's why I'm no expert on product placement. |

Challenge to Howard Stern! (Dec 14 2005 21:47 GMT) - One of my co-workers excitedly played a clip for me the other day from Howard Stern, I don't have the exact quote but he basically said that the only medium terrestrial radio should fear is podcasting, it is obvious that Howard understand the power of Podcasting, after all he of all people has had to deal with the FCC restrictions. With Howard controlling the programing on 2 channels at Sirius 24 hours a day would it not be awesome if Howard Stern the man that has grew to despise terrestrial radio went forward and embraced podcasting in such a way that he incorporated some podcasting shows into his channel offerings. With Adam Curry essentially controlling the podcast content that is aired on Sirius, he has a monopoly on that channel offerings, so if Howard Stern would drink some more podcast Koolaid maybe some shows could be featured that don't have to sign their life and their shows away to Podshow. So my challenge to Howard Stern is go out and feature some of these podcasters that you think are going to disrupt terrestrial radio and let them be featured on one of your two channels. |

The Tenth Earl of Shaftesbury and His Game (Dec 14 2005 21:47 GMT) - Peter Robinson, shaming paramours of English obituary and introducing novices such as me to its charms, reprints the story of the late 10th Earl of Shaftesbury, whose obsession with the Cannes nightclub scene and devotion "to helping vulnerable young girls working in nightspots on the French Riviera to start new lives" consumed his giving life. "But," the Telegraph memorializes, "as the mystery deepened, it seemed that his interest was more than merely philanthropic." The good Earl's memory is not entirely seedy: he served as chairman of the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1966 to 1980, perhaps helping to usher in the Solti era. |
