Kevin heard the songs I've ... (Dec 15 2005 03:58 GMT) - Kevin heard the songs I've been recording, and compares my music to Joan Jett's. That's nice of him to say, but I think he's only saying it because "Get Around" has the same meter as "I Love Rock and Roll". Finished two songs and two recipes today! |

Study Indicates Link Between Low-Fat Dairy and Lower Blood Pressure (Dec 15 2005 03:58 GMT) - Study Indicates Link Between Low-Fat Dairy and Lower Blood Pressure We've all heard, "strong bones, healthy teeth and a great smile," but recent studies in Spain linked skim milk and other low-fat dairy foods with lower blood pressure. The study followed nearly 5,900 adults aged 20-90 for over two years and found those with the highest low-fat dairy intake were about half as likely to develop high blood pressure. Conversely, fattier foods such as whole milk and ice cream did not show the same effects. The study also notes that milk provides certain proteins, caseins and whey that may act similarly to blood-pressure-lowering drugs. I suspect there are links between the intake of calcium and certain proteins and health benefits. |

Who Really Is Writing All Those Scientific Studies? (Dec 15 2005 03:58 GMT) - Who Really Is Writing All Those Scientific Studies? In a piece I wrote last year, I identified one of the countless, but more obscure, problems with conventional medicine: A reliance on medical journals filled with scientific articles crafted largely with the help of freelance ghostwriters paid by the mega-drug companies. In light of last week's revelations about the discrepancies surrounding the New England Journal of Medicine's erroneous and biased Vioxx study, this fascinating piece takes a hard look at these "seemingly objective articles" written and edited largely by ghostwriters. Interestingly, another journal -- Annals of Internal Medicine -- found itself in similar hot water earlier this year when one of the "authors" of a 2003 Vioxx study it published confessed he had little to do with the research. |

Liquid Candy On the Defense in a Court Near You? (Dec 15 2005 03:58 GMT) - Liquid Candy On the Defense in a Court Near You? Soft drink manufacturers were hoping that recent 24 percent plunge in non-diet soda sales in America's public schools and voluntary guidelines for reducing a child's exposure to high-calorie sugary drinks would be enough to forestall a huge lawsuit, the likes of Big Tobacco's multi-billion dollar settlements with 46 states. I wouldn't bet the farm on it, however, with the Center for Science in the Public Health partly behind the effort. Although none of the protagonists are talking specifics, look for a lawsuit to be filed in Massachusetts, a state with strong consumer protection laws, sometime next year. A possible problem with any sort of settlement, should one ever come: |

Baby Boomers: Start Optimizing Your Health NOW! (Dec 15 2005 03:58 GMT) - Baby Boomers: Start Optimizing Your Health NOW! Yesterday, I told you about the shrinking American life span, thanks to the epidemic of obesity and flattening smoking cessation rates. Today's news is particularly grim for baby boomers in the 55-64 range, according to the National Center for Health Statistics' Health, United States, 2005 report, considering that age group will swell by a third to 40 million by 2014. Half of the Americans currently in their Baby Boomer years have high blood pressure and 40 percent of them are obese. |

Should a Stomach Ache Stop You From Exercising? (Dec 15 2005 03:58 GMT) - Should a Stomach Ache Stop You From Exercising? I've posted a number of studies this year about the exercise-diet conundrum, namely which one is more important when it comes to optimizing your health. A new report about weight loss programs, exercise and patients with gastrointestinal problems again shows how both work hand-in-hand to improve your health safely and effectively. Researchers studying some 1,000 patients in three weight-loss programs discovered 77 percent suffered from some kind of gastrointestinal distress (diarrhea led the pack with 25 percent). And the more weight patients carried with them, the more gastrointestinal problems they had. |

New WiMax Standards Set (Dec 15 2005 03:58 GMT) - New WiMax Standards Set Another sign WiMax, the faster and cheaper alternative for wireless Internet access, will soon become a reality: Chipmakers and manufacturers can get to work on new tech toys, thanks to recently approved standards that include mobility support. Although the 802.16e standard was approved in October, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers gave their final OK last week, officially opening the door to industry-wide adoption, interoperability among different wireless vendors and innovation. At its peak, WiMax provides download speeds as high as 20 megabits per second, a huge improvement compared to current WiFi speeds that top out at 700 kilobits per second. |

Tea May Reduce Risk of Ovarian Cancer (Dec 15 2005 03:58 GMT) - Tea May Reduce Risk of Ovarian Cancer Attention tea drinkers, a recent study suggests that women who consume two or more cups of tea daily, over time, may reduce their risk of ovarian cancer. Researchers from the National Institute of Environmental Medicine in Stockholm, Sweden studied the association between tea consumption and ovarian cancer in some 61,000 women ages 40-76. They observed a 46 percent lower risk of ovarian cancer in those who consumed two or more cups per day compared to non-drinkers. Additionally, they found an 18 percent lower risk for each additional cup consumed each day. I've posted several other articles touting the potential benefits of tea. |

House Dust Stirs Up Problems With Asthma Drugs (Dec 15 2005 03:58 GMT) - House Dust Stirs Up Problems With Asthma Drugs If you read carefully between the lines, you can learn a lot about interesting combinations of substances at work in your body and environment that can harm your health. Case in point is a recent study that links exposure to toxic, bacteria-laden house dust with an significant risk of asthma. The sources for these endotoxins are pretty common, if you have a family and have any number of household possessions: Pets, humidifiers and dust. Here's the discrepancy: |

Is A Mistrial Good News For Merck? (Dec 15 2005 03:58 GMT) - Is A Mistrial Good News For Merck? A sole juror voting in favor of the plaintiff deadlocked a Houston jury, forcing a mistrial yesterday in the first federal court case debating the toxic effects of Vioxx. Some might say that stalemate ought to be good news to mega-drugmaker Merck, but not according to Wall Street and experts. Legal experts believed Merck would have a much easier time in federal court with its more business-friendly environment and stricter rules, not to mention the case focused on the short-term use of the COX-2 inhibitor. But, because Merck couldn't win what some considered to be "an easy case" may not bode well for a retrial and future cases involving long-term use of Vioxx, said one local expert. |

Obesity, Smoking Erase More Years Off American Life Span (Dec 15 2005 03:58 GMT) - Obesity, Smoking Erase More Years Off American Life Span Earlier this year, I warned you about the plague of obesity expanding the waistlines and shortening the lives of Americans. Folks, the damage you may be doing to your bodies by smoking and eating the wrong things is far worse than you can imagine, according to a new report by the American Public Health Association (free report link below). Some lowlights from the report: The average American life span fell to 69.3 years, a number surpassed by 28 nations including Japan, United Kingdom, Germany and France. |

How Are Vaccines Tested? (Dec 15 2005 03:58 GMT) - How Are Vaccines Tested? If you read my blog with any regularity, you know how dangerous and health-harming vaccines can be. Imagine what it's like for patients who volunteer for a vaccine study... With that in mind, I'm sure you'll want to review this interesting Washington Post piece about how current avian flu vaccines are tested on 150 patients at a University of Maryland site in Baltimore. Half of the patients -- largely law and medical students and faculty members at the University of Maryland along with local residents -- received a placebo while the rest got the active vaccine that varied from as little as 7. |
