Monkeys, Tribesmen, and Race, Oh My (Dec 15 2005 06:55 GMT) - Matt Drudge warns that a forthcoming column--I can't yet find it online, although these three articles argue similarly--will allege that Peter Jackson's 2005 remake of King Kong is a racist film. That charge was bandied about after the first film was released in 1933. The claim now, near as I can tell (and, this being utter silliness, I'm not exactly close-reading these critiques) is that director Peter Jackson, working as he is in our enlightened age, ought to have known better. Why weren't the chracters--ape included, of course--in his film all of a bland orange skin tone with moderate temperaments and non-descript languages and uncertain sexuality? Moreover, why didn't he use computers to ensure that all of the characters look the same, to avoid any possible charges of discrimination? |

Sun Standing Still: Celebrating Solstice (Dec 15 2005 06:54 GMT) - This December, the Earth is actually 3 million miles closer to the sun than it was in June. It is the Earth?s tilt that sets the seasonal clock to winter. At this time, the Northern Hemisphere slips farthest away from the sun, like an uncooked egg rolling to the corner of a tilted frying pan, creating the sun?s lowest arc in the sky from our perspective. |

Witch Doctors and the Cancer Scam (Dec 15 2005 06:54 GMT) - By Annie Brown and Keith Mcleod Witch doctors are targeting Scotland promising miracle cancer cures. They are preying on the sick and desperate, tricking them with fake "Juju" potions costing several hundred pounds each. A Record investigation found they were also raking in cash from "infertility cures". Last night, MP Mohammed Sarwar called on the conmen tobe prosecuted, adding: "It is absolutely shocking that they are prepared to exploit the beliefs of desperate people in this way. |

No driver's licences to dropouts (Dec 15 2005 06:54 GMT) - Ontario high school students who drop out won't be allowed to get their driver's licences under proposed new legislation. The aim is to keep students in school until they're 18 so they can graduate. Roughly 45,000 Ontario high school students, or 30 per cent, leave each year before graduating.) The province hopes to cut that number in half by 2010. Education Minister Gerard Kennedy said students applying for their licences would have to show a document to the Ministry of Transportation that proves they're an active student. |

Let's give the holidays back to the pagans (Dec 15 2005 06:54 GMT) - By Andrew M. Greeley A long time ago, a very wise teen told me she thought it was a shame Christmas came during the holidays. She had a point. I've often thought that the ancient church made a mistake when it tried to convert the Roman feast of the Saturnalia (or Lupercalia as it was also called) into the celebration of the birthday of Jesus. It didn't quite work. |

Harper has 'many differences' with US conservatives (Dec 15 2005 06:54 GMT) - Conservative Leader Stephen Harper appeared to distance himself from the U.S. administration Monday, pointing out that his positions on many issues differ from those of American conservatives. Harper sent a letter to the editor of the Washington Times in response to a Dec. 2 column by Patrick Basham of the Cato Institute titled "Gift from Canada? |

Teacher Forces Girl To Remove Religious Necklace (Dec 15 2005 06:54 GMT) - A Seminole County mother is speaking out after her daughter's teacher forced her to remove a necklace, which is a religious sign. Aleigh Garmen said Indian Trails Middle School teacher Mary McNeal told her to remove the necklace because it represents Satan. The girl took it off, but with her mother's permission she was transferred to a new class with a failing grade. Her mother feels it's no different than someone wearing a cross. |

Winter Animal Totems (Dec 15 2005 06:54 GMT) - By Robin Ivy With the arrival of winter, some of the animals that inhabit our natural environment show themselves less often. Migration and hibernation mean some of our furry and feathered friends will not return until spring. Still other animals remain or make mainly winter appearances. In our backyards, daily walks, and on all our winter travels, we encounter some of the most adaptable animals. Many make do with stored food, tree bark, seeds, or whatever they can prey upon during these colder months. |

Santa Baby? get away from me! (Dec 15 2005 06:54 GMT) - Ho Ho Ha!!! Joel Krupnik and Mildred Castellanos decked the front of their Manhattan mansion this year with a scene that includes a knife-wielding 5-foot-tall St. Nick and a tree full of decapitated Barbie dolls. Hidden partly behind a tree, the merry old elf grasps a disembodied doll’s head with fake blood streaming from its eye [... |
