After The Smoke Has Cleared (Hemel Hempstead) [Stewart Ritchie] (Dec 15 2005 22:51 GMT) - The fires are now out in Hemel Hempstead, and the long process of cleaning-up and renovation has begun. The major insurance firms have been present all week to help and advise businesses and homeowners that have been effected. For homeowners, damages may run into thousands of pounds, but for the major firms closest to the Buncefield site the figures are in the hundreds of thousands if not millions. Discounting any funds that may eventually be allocated from regional or national government to address the infrastructure issues, there is a great deal of money already in the pipelines [no pun intended]. Locally there are a great number of warehouse staff, pickers and packers who will not be having a particularly merry christmas. |

Intel CEO on $100 Laptop (Dec 15 2005 22:51 GMT) - Yahoo News has a story about Criag Barrett pooh-poohing the idea: "Mr. Negroponte has called it a $100 laptop -- I think a more realistic title should be 'the $100 gadget'," Barrett, chairman of the world's largest chip maker, told a press conference in Sri Lanka. "The problem is that gadgets have not been successful." Barrett said similar schemes in the past elsewhere in the world had failed and users would not be satisfied with the new machine's limited range of programs. |

Crickets (Dec 15 2005 22:50 GMT) - Here's something fascinating: For the third time in a year, the Iraqis have gone to vote in elections that were by and large peaceful, and featured a high turnout. In fact, in the current elections, the turnout was the highest yet since the Sunnis appear to have decided that their best bet for having any sort of power in Iraq is to join the democratic process (at least for now). In less than 3 years, the Iraqis have built, with our help, first an interim government, then a constitution, and now a permanent government. In the time frame that saw... |

Bush and the Irrelevance of WMD (Dec 15 2005 22:50 GMT) - Bush and the Irrelevance of WMDAt Think Progress, Judd points out a Bush flip-flop on the relevance of WMD, which is really not much different than The New Republic's June, 2004 flip-flop on the relevance of WMD.Bush knows he'll have Democrat Joe Lieberman behind him on this. (Roll your eyes if you must - but you know it's true.)Don't get me wrong - I know how disgusted you feel when you see this man, Mr. Bush, telling you that he thinks that WMD is irrelevant because his final rationale, the only one left that he could peddle to the public, is a suitable moral replacement. |

DRIVING AMERICAN INNOVATION: FORD TURNS PAINT FUMES INTO ELECTRICITY TO HELP POWER PLANT (Dec 15 2005 22:49 GMT) - A leader in environmental innovation, Ford Motor Company is turning paint fumes into fuel, saving energy and money. Piloted in 2004 at the Ford Rouge Center, Fumes-to-Fuel is turning emissions from its painting operations into electricity for the Michigan Truck plant. The Fumes-to-Fuel process generates 55 kilowatt-hours of electric power every hour - enough for an average city block. Ultimately, the system could power one-third of the plant's paint shop. The technology works by pulling volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the paint air emissions by using fluidized carbon beads. |

FORD'S EASY FUEL SYSTEM TAKES THE GUESSWORK OUT OF FILLING UP (Dec 15 2005 22:49 GMT) - When Rudolph Diesel devised a more efficient engine in 1892, he probably did not envision the situation that exists today: Gasoline and diesel fuel sold next to each other from look-alike pumps, often four to six in a row. But for anyone who accidentally fills their diesel-powered car with gasoline, it can be a E4,000-E5,000 ($4,700-$5,900) case of mistaken identity. Ford of Europe has now come up with a solution for the mis-fueling of cars, a problem that affects hundreds of thousands of people in Europe each year. It's called Easy Fuel, and it is a simple device that prevents a gasoline nozzle from being inserted into a car with a diesel engine. |
