Mathematicians crochet chaos (Dec 15 2005 23:51 GMT) - Mathematicians have made a crochet model of chaos - and are challenging anyone else to repeat the effort. Dr Hinke Osinga and Professor Bernd Krauskopf, of Bristol University's engineering mathematics department, used 25,511 crochet stitches to represent the Lorenz equations. With picture . |

Animal DNA gets used for justice instead of vivisection (Dec 15 2005 23:50 GMT) - Palisade sends word that DNA evidence is becoming more and more useful in efforts to catch poachers, smugglers, and even murderers. In one somewhat gruesome case, investigators were able to land a conviction based on the DNA found in a homemade hot dog. While I'm normally cynical over any efforts to bring poachers to justice, DNA has one of those magic sounds to it that suggests if people are going to the trouble of taking samples, some decent work must be getting done out there. Woman, council in yoghurt battle (Dec 15 2005 23:50 GMT) - A UK woman is being fined by the local council over the use of yoghurt to paint a portion of her house. Or possibly over her refusal to cover her house in manure. It's very, very confusing, and if I was on the UK tourism council, I'd be worried about perceptions right about now. As near as I can tell, there's some kind of bylaw requiring all houses in the are to look the same, so she's been ordered to apply some kind of weathering agent to the brickwork to make her place match. The recommendations have included manure and yoghurt, and yes, after the day I've had, I'm tempted to move there just to start a fight. |

The Narwhal's secrets revealed! (Dec 15 2005 23:50 GMT) - bfischer notes that scientists have discovered the secret of the narwhal's tusk. The horn, which can measure nine feet in length, has mystified the world for centuries, but it looks like it's actually a sensor of sorts, filled with millions of nerve endings that can detect changes in temperature, pressure, and who knows what else. These days I'm amazed that scientists are able to deduce that animals are capable of any feeling at all, so I reckon this is momentous news. Link. |

Kitchenware porn not as big a draw as VP (Dec 15 2005 23:50 GMT) - This next story from kunsjoi is relevant because it involves an onion and pornography, and we need a break from the depressing animal stuff: shoppers at a Cheshire store were treated to some interesting instructional footage when a demonstration video showing off an onion chopper switched to hardcore porn midway through the tape. While we like to debate over whether or not nudity helps get AR messages across, we at least now know that it doesn't help sell onion choppers. Link. |

Chimps score better than children at learning (Dec 15 2005 23:50 GMT) - Dave Noisy reports that chimpanzees are better at figuring things out than human children are, or at the very least, chimps are less prone to senseless imitation. While I doubt this will shift the balance of vivisection from Bobo to little Suzie, check it out: chimpanzees were shown how to get food from a puzzle, and easily figured out which steps in the instructions weren't necessary. The majority of children, however, repeated the steps completely. While the kids usually outgrow their poor "getting food out of boxes" skills, it's unfortunate that they cling to a certain (can I say "sheep like"? |
