'Desperate' to debut on Chinese TV (Dec 15 2005 23:46 GMT) - TV News: Series dubbed into Mandarin, aired as 3 back-to-back episodes per night -- ABC's "Desperate Housewives" will debut Monday on China's state-run CCTV8. The Mouse House worked out the deal with the pubcaster during the summer, and the show was due to air in September. There's no word on what caused the delay or what, if any, license fee was paid for the show, since China typically hands over just a few thousand dollars per episode for the few foreign TV series it imports. |

Two Christmass gifts for your non-Iranian friends (Dec 15 2005 23:46 GMT) - I have a suggestion for all Iranians who live abroad and all others who are interested in Iran. It might be actually a bit late, but I think if you wanted to somehow help undo the damage Ahmadinejad has done to the image of Iran in the past few weeks, there are two books which could make very good Christmas gifts to your non-Iranian friends and relatives: Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi: An easy-to-read and interesting graphic novel about a young Iranian girl and how the revolution, war, etc. affected her life and her middle-class family. |

What's with the new anti-Israeli rhetoric (Dec 15 2005 23:46 GMT) - Having read Kayhan newspaper's editorial, it's now obvious that the new anti-Israeli line of the Ahmadinejad and his allies is a change in policy, not a random personal rant by Ahmadinejad. But why this and why now? Diversion: Iran, because of the deep internal rows especially among conservatives, has become a very dysfunctional state and the latest disasters (plane crash and Tehran's air pollution) are only two visible sings of that. So it makes sense for the government to divert the attention of the people inside Iran and the global community from these horrible incidents. |

Smoking and blogging (Dec 15 2005 23:46 GMT) - Artwork by Amir Rad, via Parastoo I was on Radio Open Source last night with four other wonderful women who have done work on Iran. Chris Lydon asked about how blogs in Iran are political. This is usually asked and I guess it's a central question to understand Iran. But now I have a better answer: When smoking for women is political in Iran, how could blogging and making your private life public not be?... |
