Say no to ASI video survey requests (Dec 18 2005 20:45 GMT) - Sometimes, my husband is just too nice. Got a call last week from a market research company asking if they could send a video of a sitcom pilot for him to watch and answer a few questions about. The show is called Dads and involves C. Thomas Howell, Rue McClanahan, Jane Sibbett (among the names I gleaned from the opening credits) Calling this painful is an insult to agony. Since Ian's the only one under any agreements, once the opening credits began, I began Googling for further info. |

Canon EF-S 17-85 USM Lens Review At Camera Labs (Dec 18 2005 20:44 GMT) - Canon's EF-S f4~5.6 IS 17-85 USM Lens has been reviewed at Camera Labs and here's the verdict. "In practice though, the 17-85mm EF-S is a slightly mixed bag. On the upside, the range is considerably more useful than the basic 3x of the 18-55mm, squeezing in fractionally more at the wide angle end, and offering far more scope at the telephoto. Now you really can get closer to subjects and produce decent-looking portraits with a nice small depth of field. |

ShuttlePro 2 is a big help (Dec 18 2005 20:44 GMT) - I've had a ShuttlePro 2 device from Contour Designs sitting in a box on a bookshelf in my cube for quite some time, but never have gotten a chance to try it out until this week. Wow, do I wish I had done it sooner. This handy device makes navigating a video editing timeline much, much easier. And, I thought it would be odd to use it along side a mouse (right hand on the mouse, left on the ShuttlePro), but I've adapted quickly. The jog wheel and programmable shortcut buttons make selecting in/out points and inserting video a breeze. |

'The Civilian Toll of War' Takes A Toll (Dec 18 2005 20:42 GMT) - It became limelight figure numero uno for forty-eight hours last week: 30,000. The number of civilian deaths as a result of the Iraq War, as quoted by President Bush in response to a reporter's question. As a White House press briefing later clarified, the president's number was merely a generality he cobbled from media reports. Despite this--and that isn't a difficult pill to swallow, as the president's desk in the Oval Office is weighted with thousands of figures and reports, few of which are media-friendly numeric morsels like 'Number of Civilian Deaths in Iraq'--the mainstream media highlighted the president's number as some sort of groundbreaking admission. |
