Google As Your Backup Brain (Dec 19 2005 10:57 GMT) - Over three years ago, I joked that Google was my backup brain, but for many that's becoming much less of a joke these days. The reliance on Google, combined with always on, wireless connectivity means that remembering certain things (or playing trivia games), just isn't that relevant any more. Even some doctors are found trying to diagnose with the aid of Google. Of course, this plays right into what we were saying a few weeks ago about the importance of figuring out which things to ignore. Letting Google (or other search engines, of course) sweat the little details could mean more efficient use of the brain on bigger, more important things. |

urgent advice needed - aliaising dynamic urls [Nick McKenna] (Dec 19 2005 10:56 GMT) - Hi, We are about to launch a new version of our website and our SEO has told us that we can improve our rankings by aliasing the urls of dynamic pages (that are non-spiderable by search engine robots) into urls that are. I have now been told by our hosting provider that this cannot be done by the webserver and that each dynamic page must be recreated as a static page and saved under the spiderable url. This feels like a very lumpy approach and would be a considerable amount of work for us. I don't quite believe that this is our only option and would appreciate independent opinions many thanks Nick McKenna Sunisle Holidays |

Oakland: Bed Wars Cause Collateral Damage (Dec 19 2005 10:55 GMT) - We have covered the great Bed Wars for a couple of years now, and they continue to rage. All in all, hotel guests have been getting a better nights sleep, courtesy of the new beds at many hotels including Westin, Marriott, and Crowne Plaza hotels, however, like any war, collateral damage is a problem. Housekeepers who have to single handedly lift these enormous new mattresses are throwing out their backs at an alarming rate. Researchers guess that three out of four housekeepers are experiencing real pain. |
