Having covered the supermarket industry for a few years in my early reporter days, I thought I'd add my two cents. The supermarket industry has changed enormously in the past decade or so. The Food Marketing Institute, which tracks such things, shows just how close to the vest most supermarkets operate. According to FMI's numbers, supermarkets are lucky is they come away with a gross margin (the difference between the cost of goods and the gross revenue) of about 27 percent. |
