DreamMates Dream Dates? (Dec 19 2005 21:58 GMT) - Members make dating sites. For those that have come late to the game, it can be hard to get a foothold. There are just so many dating sites now that are competing for the same members and offering a similar product that the industry is going to see a similar dot-com era bust. One of the solutions to this problems is to have sites share their database of members, so no matter if you sign up for one, you end up having your profile marketed on many. The Relationship Exchange network of sites is one such setup that is based on member sharing. |

Task Coach 0.53 (Default branch) (Dec 19 2005 21:58 GMT) - Task Coach is a simple todo manager to manage personal tasks and todo lists. It grew out of a frustration that well-known task managers, such as those provided with Outlook or Lotus Notes, do not provide facilities for composite tasks. Often, tasks and other things to do consist of several activities. Task Coach is designed to deal with composite tasks. License: |

Clarence Fisher - Validating Information - Remote Access (Dec 19 2005 21:57 GMT) - I think there are answers to the concerns Clarence Fisher raises in this item, but I think it is important that the concerns be aired. He reaises two major objections to the concept of validating information through aggregation. First, students do not have the opportunity. "Most often our kids work in units of study." And second, "as St. |

Linda E. Patrik - Using Blogs to Teach Philosophy - Academic Commons (Dec 19 2005 21:57 GMT) - A project that is close to my own roots. Interestingly, the author writes, "Unlike academic writing in most other disciplines, philosophical writing frequently and strongly states the 'I' because philosophers have to develop and defend their own positions. They cannot weasel out of taking responsibility for their views, and thus the assertion of the 'I' means that they are willing to stand or fall with their expressed position." [] [Tags: , ] [] |

Stephen Downes - Photos - Stephen's Web (Dec 19 2005 21:57 GMT) - As part of my ongoing coding efforts I wrote my file upload routines last week, which gave me the impetus to update my photo galleries. I'm still writing captions, but all the photos are now accessible in my new gallery format. I'm planning a code release when I get back from the Christmas break; the gallery file upload and auto-generation will be a part of this (you have to take your own pictures, though). [] [Tags: |

Japanese Want Quake-Alarm Cellphones Sooner Rather Than Later (Dec 19 2005 21:57 GMT) - With all the natural disasters this past year, Japan isn't taking any chances. As one of the highest risk areas for earthquakes, the country's Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry is looking to develop an emergency broadcast system that would be able to turn on your cell phone and send a warning alarm and other information via text messaging. The system would use a digital terrestrial television broadcasting signal and would receive data, including information about disasters and evacuation instructions and routes. The plan is to use a new broadcasting system called One Seg that will be used to play TV shows on cellphones—due out in April of next year. |
