Christmas Muglets (Dec 21 2005 19:52 GMT) - As you surely know, today is the winter solstice. That?s why everyone here at FJ Towers got up at the crack of dawn to see the shortest day in, and cut mistletoe from high up in the trees*. Since then, we?ve been sipping on mulled wine, listening to Nat King Cole croon away, and making funny little Christmas Muglets of each other. |

Msoft Gets the Early Jump with Blue Dragon... Really Early (Dec 21 2005 19:52 GMT) - A taste of things to come or a last-ditch attempt to get Japanese gamers to buy the 360? Word round the campfire is that Msoft Japan has TV trailers for the upcoming RPG Blue Dragon up on domestic TV. The game is the work of Final Fantasy's Hironobu Sakaguchi and follows the adventures a boy named Shu, his two friends and a magic blue dragon. Characters were created by Akira Toriyama, who gave us Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball Z and who has a serious dragon fetish. The trailers look dandy, but if this is true, I find disquieting and slightly misleading that the company is already pushing the game on television. |

?The Woman Who Hitchhiked with Cats? (Dec 21 2005 19:52 GMT) - "THE WOMAN WHO HITCHHIKED WITH CATS." George Potter begins serializing another inspired story. This one has special meaning for me. But as with all of George's tales, it's a glorious read for anybody who appreciates great storytelling. And I want one of those $40 bills. |

Of Hacks and Keyboards... (Dec 21 2005 19:52 GMT) - I am not sure if I missed something or not, but I am completely surprised at this conversation about being notified when a tab changes in a TabControl. I am surprised that no one has mentioned TabIndexChanged event or, if you are working on a platform that does not support that event (such as Windows CE), the SelectedIndexChanged event. But what is even more surprising to me is that, not only did someone suggest setting up a mouse event handler to be notified when the user selects the tab, the original author had actually tried it! Fortunately, it seems that this does not work. From a usability perspective, what about the keyboard? |

How unscrupulous firms are manipulating Google (Dec 21 2005 19:51 GMT) - It is known as the Google dance, a delicate struggle between technicians at the worlds largest internet search engine and the spin doctors who manipulate the worldwide web for commercial ends. Every day one group tries to prevent the other from abusing Googles index of more than 8bn web pages. The stakes are high. As Britain's online shoppers spend £150m every day in the run up to Christmas, the value of a high ranking on Google is potentially worth millions to retailers, website owners and criminals alike. |

More than 60 percent of the people who responded to our request for personal experiences with Firefox 1.5 reported they had no problems whatsoever with the browser software. And there is absolutely no statistically valid way to draw any hard conclusions about how many people are having stability issues with Firefox 1.5 based on this small sample size. |

Top 10 services to lock down on Windows Server 2003 (Dec 21 2005 19:51 GMT) - The caveat is that most server machines are running more software that generally needs clients with the ability to remotely connect to it, and thus you'll need to lock down some different services and perhaps leave a few more open than you would on a workstation. Additionally, there are many more possible services that can be installed on a Windows Server 2003 machine, antivirus, mail, DNS and Web services are all possibilities, so it's more difficult to issue blanket recommendations. In order to limit the scope a bit and still be able to provide definitive advice in this tip, I'll discuss the top 10 services on Windows Server 2003 to watch for. |

Top 10 tricks causing spyware epidemic (Dec 21 2005 19:51 GMT) - Spyware tricks have become increasingly devious, making spyware and adware stick to machines longer, more difficult to remove and sometimes impossible to see with ordinary methods. In the spyware tricks series I wrote about seeing installations with multiple resuscitators, increasing numbers of randomly named files, even randomly named folders. Internet Explorer security settings are being changed by spyware and hosts files are being hijacked. We've recently seen installations of keyloggers and spam bots along with your garden variety of adware. Now add rootkits to that list. |
