Symantec Anti Virus Vulnerability (Dec 21 2005 19:51 GMT) - A security researcher has uncovered a dangerous weakness in Symantec's antivirus products that could allow malware to corrupt the software and execute malicious programs on the user's computer. Alex Wheeler, a security researcher who recently left Internet Security Systems' said there is a problem in the way that Symantec's software unwraps RAR files, a form of file compression similar to ZIP files. Wheeler found that a virus or worm hidden inside a specially crafted RAR file could be made to run on the user's machine and allow attackers to take complete control over computers running the program. |

Giving AOL expanded rights to banner advertising on Google could help Microsoft win more advertising business for its search service because it could rub existing Google customers the wrong way, they said. |

Bush and Executive Activism (Dec 21 2005 19:50 GMT) - Law Professor Doug Berman who writes Sentencing Law and Policy, the go-to blog on criminal sentencing, e-mailed me some thoughts on Bush and his warrantless electronic surveillance orders, the topic being a little off-subject for his blog. He says the fitting label for Bush's behavior is "executive activism." Unwilling or unable to obtain the power they seek though the legislative process, this administration has made up the law themselves. I like the label and will go with it. Prof. |
