Study Finds Significant Independent Association Between Air Pollution and Cardiovascular Risk (Dec 21 2005 20:38 GMT) - Long term air pollution exposure = acceleration of atherosclerosis and vascular inflammation. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) today published the findings of a study directed by Mount Sinai School of Medicine Researchers and funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH). The findings indicate a significant independent association between exposure to long term air pollution and the acceleration of atherosclerosis and vascular inflammation in an animal model. For the first time researchers were able to substantiate the findings by recreating real-world exposure to air pollution in concentrations and size molecules strongly linked with cardiovascular disease. New Study Says Two Million Americans Harbor Drug-Resistant Superbug (Dec 21 2005 20:36 GMT) - New research estimates that about 2 million people carry a strain of drug-resistant bacteria in their noses. The research, conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is the first reliable nationwide estimate of colonization with Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). It is published in the Jan. 15 issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases, now available online. Those colonized with normal strains of staph are at higher risk of infection with the bacterium, which can lead to conditions ranging from mild skin infections to fatal toxic shock syndrome. |
