Senate Approves Six-Month Patriot Act Extension; House Vote Expected (Dec 22 2005 16:56 GMT) - [Meerkat: An Open Wire Service] - On December 21, the Senate voted to extend for six months, without change, the 16 expiring provisions of the Patriot Act, giving Congress the opportunity to improve the Act by adding additional checks and balances when it reconvenes in 2006. The vote came after a bipartisan group of 52 Senators signed a letter in support of a brief extension. The House is expected to consider the measure today. CDT supports the six-month extension. |
