Online Shopping Empowers Procrastinators (Dec 22 2005 22:49 GMT) - All the uproar over "Cyber Monday" -- the Monday after Thanksgiving, when people supposedly rushed online at work to do holiday shopping -- both about how it was a PR invention, and then that the actual date simply got screwed up has obscured the real truth about online holiday shopping: that it lets people procrastinate. A study says that people spent 29 percent more online last week than they did in the same week last year, spurred on by last-minute promotions and cheaper, faster shipping. It's getting down to the last minute to get things in time for Christmas or the beginning of Hanukkah -- so next week, expect to see a story about how well emailed gift certificates sold this week. |

Four Brothers (Dec 22 2005 22:49 GMT) - Rent It The Movie: A Wintery revenge drama, "Four Brothers" is the latest from director John Singleton ("Higher Learning"). The picture revolves around four formerly "lost cause" foster children who were taken in by a caring woman (Fionnula Flanagan) and raised as best as she could manage. Early in the film, she is killed in a convenience store, leading to a tearful reunion of the four children, now grown up (Mark Wahlberg, Garrett Hedlund, Tyrese Gibson and Andre Benjamin, who all have good chemistry with each other.) When the four return, they decide to investigate the crime themselves and seek justice, eventually finding that a local gangster (Chiwetel Ejiofor, excellent in "Serenity") is behind the crime. |

The Baxter (Dec 22 2005 22:49 GMT) - Rent It The Movie: Those who are fans of the cult sketch comedy series "The State" will be familiar with Michael Showalter, one of the main stars of that series. The former "State" star stars, wrote and directed this indie romantic comedy, which has a particular, oddball sense of timing and humor that brings some humor out of lines and situations that wouldn't otherwise be - in my opinion - that funny on the page. Showalter stars as Elliot Sherman, a self-described "Baxter" (the nice, average guy who the girl settles for while waiting for the star to sweep her off her feet) who is about to get married to the girl of his dreams (Elizabeth Banks, who also made an appearance in "40-Year-Old Virgin" last Summer) when her former boyfriend (Justin Therox) re-enters the picture and everything begins to fall apart. Meanwhile, Elliot has become friends with new temp worker Cecil (Michelle W... |
