We no longer have to know how to set up a website to get our opinions out there – blogs are easy to set up on a standard template, while Wikipedia (www.wikipedia.org) lets us contribute to or edit any encyclopedia entry we want – there are 850,000 so far, and the only editing we might get comes from other users. Is this freedom, or madness? |

Christmas Monstrosity (Dec 25 2005 19:54 GMT) - I was in the airport yesterday, flying home for Christmas, and there was a brand-new (to me) security apparatus. Instead of having their bags hand-searched, the people selected for advanced screening were stepping into a monster of a machine that would then shoot bursts of air at them. Presumably the air bursts are meant to dislodge any small particles of explosives, gunpowder, or other evidence of "questionable activities". These particles are then probably sucked into some analysis rig such as a Mass Spectrometer. I wonder what kind of detection limits they have? |
