The Agency That Is Big Brother (Dec 26 2005 21:58 GMT) - Deep in a remote, fog-layered hollow near Sugar Grove, West Virginia, hidden by fortress-like mountains, sits the United State's largest eavesdropping bug. Located in a radio quiet zone, the station's large parabolic dishes secretly and silently sweep in millions of private telephone calls and e-mail messages an hour. Run by the ultrasecret National Security Agency, the listening post intercepts all international communications entering the eastern United States. Another NSA listening post, in Yakima, Washington, eavesdrops on the western half of the country. Both are part of ECHELON |

People Power Vs Google (Dec 26 2005 21:58 GMT) - Om Malik writes: Will a people’s collective be able to beat Google at the search game? The company has been in a limited beta since October, and today conducted a major update to its infrastructure and interface, according to their blog. ... |

Korean opt-in SMS notification for indictments (Dec 26 2005 21:57 GMT) - (Via boingboing) Reuters reports that Korean citizens will receive SMS notification of legal indictments. Strangely, this is described as an opt-in service. If I suspected that I was going to be indicted, I don't know whether "sign up for SMS indictment service" would be that high on my to-do list: South Koreans may look at their mobile phones with some trepidation in the new year because prosecutors will start telling people they have been indicted via text messages, an official said Monday. In a country where about 75 percent of the population carries mobile phones, prosecutors felt it was time to move away from sending legal notices on paper and send them electronically instead, said Lee Young-pyo, an administrative official. |

Christian History: Pelagian Heresy (Dec 26 2005 21:54 GMT) - One of the central and fundamental disagreements between humanism and Christianity lies in the very nature of humanity itself.
