Radiation in Excess (Dec 26 2005 23:39 GMT) - Radiation in Excess Obviously, we are exposed to many sources of radiation in everyday life and no matter what we do, we cannot avoid them. The radiation that we receive from the earth is very minimal and has been around since the beginning of time (and it will always be around). However, some of our own activities has in fact increased the amount of radiation we are exposed to during our everyday lives. |

Radon (Dec 26 2005 23:39 GMT) - Radon Since radioactive substances are found in small amounts in soil and water throughout the world, we can actually ingest it through the food and water we drink. Even the air we breathe contains some radioactive materials in the form of radioactive gases like radon and thoron. These gases are present due to the decay of radioactive rocks (like uranium and thorium) within the earth’s crust. The gases move up through the earth until they become dispersed through the air. Some of the decaying products of these gases attach to dust particles within the air. |

Radiation (Dec 26 2005 23:39 GMT) - Radiation Radiation therapy is the second major cancer treatment today. One problem with this form of therapy is that it only works on a small, localized area. It does not travel through a patient. Rather it must be “focused” at the site of the tumor. Therefore, this type of treatment will not usually be effective if the tumor has spread. |

Angiogenesis Inhibitors (Dec 26 2005 23:39 GMT) - Angiogenesis Inhibitors Scientists have peered into the genetics of cells comprising blood vessels which nourish tumors. They have discovered several genes (at least 46) that are turned on in vessels induced by tumors, but not on in normal vessels. The genetic differences between tumor induced and normal vessels could in theory, be used as a target. Drugs could be developed to interfere with the genes on the tumor induced vessels to halt their formation. Thus, the tumor would not grow any larger. |
