The Song Tapper (Dec 29 2005 07:32 GMT) - This is one of those "I wish I came up with this" thing. Song Tapper has potential to reduce mankind's cumulative frustration by a few notch. We all have those moments where a melody stuck in your head but you can't quite place what song it was. And humming it to your friends do nothing but drawing nasty sneer. (especially when he/she now becomes equally frustrated at not identifying it) And that's the itch Song Tapper is trying to scratch. |

A great podcast about audio recording, and site about mics (Dec 29 2005 07:32 GMT) - Following up on my earlier post about microphones, connectors, and sound recording, I just stumbled across and listened (in one day) to all five episodes of a great Vancouver-based podcast called Inside Home Recording. The website is spartan, so if you want to subscribe, here are the iTunes link (I haven't been able to figure out the RSS subscription feed if you don't use iTunes). Anyway, hosts James Devon and Paul Garay do a great job of providing both basic and relatively advanced tips, tricks, techniques, lessons, interviews, and gear reviews in half-hour blocks. I just wish they had more than five episodes already. The December 2 episode has a good overview of microphone technologies, and also recommends an online guide from Audio-Technica that talks about microphones, starting from the basics, in great detail. |

Using Gnulib to improve software portability (29 Dec 2005) (Dec 29 2005 07:30 GMT) - How to use Gnulib to write more portable code."Many, if not most, free and open source software projects are developed primarily on Linux-based systems using the GNU C Library (glibc). Projects that use glibc are likely to depend on functions that are not available on systems that use different C libraries, such as the different BSD flavors. When packages are built on systems that don't use glibc they often fail, because the other C libraries are missing functions found in glibc. The GNU Po |

Validate Localized Data with Regular Expressions (29 Dec 2005) (Dec 29 2005 07:30 GMT) - Data validation is a common chore in programming any user interface. The Java language's regular-expression support can make data validation easier. You can define a regular expression that describes valid data and then let the Java runtime see if it matches. But certain types of data have different formats in different locales. The ResourceBundle class lets you work with locale-specific data in an elegant way. |

And so 3D on the Web faded away. It turns out that VRML lives on in its XML flavor, X3D, which has grown to encompass VRML's siblings H-Anim (Humanoid Animation) and GeoVRML. This article focuses on a couple of uses that X3D is ready for now, and takes a look at where VRML might go in the future. |
