Structural remodeling of neurons demonstrated in mature brains (Dec 29 2005 20:58 GMT) - Despite the prevailing belief that adult brain cells don't grow, a researcher at MIT's Picower Institute for Learning and Memory reports in the Dec. 27 issue of Public Library of Science (PLoS) Biology that structural remodeling of neurons does in fact occur in mature brains. This finding means that it may one day be possible to grow new cells to replace ones damaged by disease or spinal cord injury, such as the one that paralyzed the late actor Christopher Reeve. |

SchwarzenWatcher Goes Back to School (Dec 29 2005 20:56 GMT) - With the economy getting better (we'll leave a discussion as to whether the economy is that good or not to others because we barely passed Macro Economics), it means more money for the state coffers. And with more money going to the state coffers, Herr Governator has more money to spend. So he made a decision as to what do to with it-- give it to the UC and CSU system so that schools don't have to raise fees this year. The schools were all set to raise fees by 8% for undergrads, 10% for grad students. Now, yes, the fees wouldn't have to be increased if it wasn't due to some agreement with the UC system to raise fees or else lose funding. |
