Nigeria [analysis]: Electronic Media And Coverage of 2006 Disasters (Dec 31 2005 04:34 GMT) - The strength of any institution is best measured during a national tragedy. Crisis brings out the best and worst in people and institutions. The air disasters of October 22 and December 10, 2005 have exposed the gross incompetence of most Nigerian radio and television stations with regard to their ability to respond quickly to the public hunger for current and reliable news on the tragedies. At a time when people were eager to know the fate of hundreds of their relatives, the electronic media filled the airwaves and television screens with sports, entertainment and religious programmes. It did not occur to anyone at these stations that the sight of half-clad dancers, mediocre musicians, sweaty footballers and sweet-talking preachers on our screens was inappropriate for a nation in the grip an unfolding disaster. |
