Fryer Art Threatens Apple Patent Application (Jan 12 2006 23:57 GMT) - One slightly cool little feature of Apple's new Intel-based laptop is the connector for its power cord. Instead of being a plug that fits into a socket, the connector -- called MagSafe -- is held in by a magnet, so if it's yanked on or tripped over, it comes out without breaking anything. Steve Jobs was quite proud of the new connector, noting that it was "patent pending", but similar connectors have been used on deep fryers and other kitchen appliances for some time now. The idea is that should a child reach up and grab the cord, it will just detach, instead of showering the kid with hot oil. While the consequences of yanking a MacBook Pro cord probably aren't so dire, Steve's hopes for a patent aren't looking too likely. |

Ping-O-Scratch (Jan 12 2006 23:56 GMT) - It is amazing Ping-O-Matic has handled as much traffic as it has thus far, but it really wasn’t conceived with these levels even imagined. It hasn’t had a good update since it was doing 20-30 reqs/second. Time to rip it out and start from the ground up. |

Shortcuts: Clear Memory, Lock Workstation, Restart, Shutdown, Change Icon (Jan 12 2006 23:56 GMT) - Recently, while I was tweaking the Windows installed on my laptop, I discovered four shortcuts which I thought were cool and decided to pass them along. The first is a shortcut to shut the system down. Caution when using this one as it gives no prompt after being run it simply ends all processes and calls the command to power down the system. Any unsaved data will be lost. The second is similar except that it reboots the system. |

BRAINic's Egged Shaped MP3 Player (Jan 12 2006 23:54 GMT) - Reminiscent of a Tamagotchi, BRAINic took the egged shaped design into their latest MP3 player. Grabbing attention with its arguably cute egg-shaped design features a 9.8mm thick shell with the control functions located in the back. Apart from the obvious color display, further technical specifications and features have yet to be disclosed; however there are rumors of video support. |
