Concert Review: The Perfect Addiction and Ever We Fall (Jan 31 2006 02:44 GMT) - In going to see this show, I learned about a little club I didn't even know existed just twenty short minutes from my house. Howard's Club H is smack in the middle of this area's college town - Bowling Green, OH. Right under my nose, it has been this little dingy, hole in the wall. (Don't even get me started on what kind of social diseases must be crawling all over the bathroom.) But somewhere beneath the grime and the gloom seems to be the perfect venue for the music I was about to hear. |

Go Sit In the Hot Seat? No Thanks! (Jan 31 2006 02:42 GMT) - [Meerkat: An Open Wire Service] - This speaks for itself. The leading US-based Internet companies are showing little interest in attending a Congressional briefing on worries that the firms are bending to the wishes of China's censors. Microsoft and Cisco Systems have refused to attend the event, while Google and Yahoo are non-committal, officials said.... |

Hard Drive Dying Dance Track Winner (Jan 31 2006 02:37 GMT) - There were well more than 100 entries in this remix competition—and picking the winner was a tough tough decision. It's clear that the challenge of making music based on the sound of Hitachi hard drives failing was as much a reason to take part as winning the Tokyoflash Equalizer watch. So before announcing the winner, let's review the highlights: Rap Wars: |

Google: Don't Be Evil (Jan 31 2006 02:33 GMT) - Google has joined Yahoo and Microsoft by launching a government-censored version of its search engine, defending the move as a trade-off granting the Chinese greater access to other information. What is annoying is it comes a week after Google gave the finger to the US department of Justice when asked to disclose data on what people were searching for in Google. Google, whose motto is "Don't do evil" has now joined Microsoft and Yahoo in an act of hypocrisy by compromising its values for investors' benefit. Searches with many words like falung gong, Dalai Lama, Taiwan independence, Tiananmen, show different results from Google.com and Google. |

What the world outside saw (Jan 31 2006 02:26 GMT) - While we obsessed over the cloture vote, that was not news to the rest of the country, blissfully unaware. What was? Bob Woodruff almost getting killed and Jill Carroll pleading for her life, both in Iraq. Go to the homepages right now (as of 6:20 PT) of CNN, ABC News, Fox News, and CBS News. |

To Outlive the Menace of Tyranny, If Necessary for Years... (Jan 31 2006 02:25 GMT) - We Shall Organize on the Beaches. We shall organize on the landing grounds, we shall organize in the fields and in the streets, we shall organize in the hills; we shall never surrender. OK, it's some poetic liberty, but when I saw Meteor Blades' post Never Surrender, the resonance and rhythm of these words popped into my head. |

DVD Review: Small Faces Under Review (Jan 31 2006 02:25 GMT) - Back in my college days, I attended a theatre conference with an actor friend. There was an interesting seminar that featured a couple of local newspaper critics speaking on the theatre scene and fielding questions from the young thespians. One young man asked why the critics couldn't give all the small, struggling theatre companies good reviews because bad ones often hurt audience attendance, and a fledgling troupe's bottom line. One of the journalists responded that just because a theatre group is struggling to survive doesn't mean it should get away with producing mediocre or bad shows. I suspect the producers of the new DVD documentary Small Faces Under Review are like the naive actor mentioned above. |
