Transformation, metamorphosis and spiritual awakening (Sep 30 2006 07:44 GMT) - When the limited, programmed mind finally opens up to the infinity of the mystery which has been repressed until then, a person often finds him or herself drowning in limitless implausibility, and this does not assist the individual to lead a responsible, capable, limited life. For when the mind is finally divorced from all its previous assumptions, ideas, and understandings, it suddenly stands upon the brink of the chilling Unknowable. It is at this point where some sink, some swim, some fall to their deaths, and some ...learn to fly. This is the vertiginous uncertainty of life, of absolute incomprehension, when all supports and suppositions come crashing inexorably to the ground. |

Students Back ?Pagan Pride' Festival (Sep 30 2006 07:44 GMT) - By MATTHEW CHAYES After scrambling to reconsider their decision to sponsor a daylong "Pagan Pride" festival this weekend, student leaders at an upstate public college decided last night to support the festival despite outrage from Catholics who complained to trustees of the State University of New York system that the event ridicules Christianity and Jesus Christ. The Christian activists say the pagan festival, to be held at Adirondack Community College, located about 55 miles outside Albany in Queensbury, N.Y., constitutes hate speech that few would tolerate if other groups were being disrespected. Open it to one, you have to open it to all," he said. |

Urination will go to committee (Sep 30 2006 07:44 GMT) - A local decision that schoolboys must sit on toilet seats when urinating has provoked political debate. The head of The Democrats Party, a splinter group of former Progress Party hardliners, Vidar Kleppe, is outraged that boys at Dvergsnes School in Kristiansand have to sit and pee. Kleppe accuses the school of fiddling with God's work, and wants the matter discussed at the executive committee level of the local council, newspaper Dagbladet reports. "When boys are not allowed to pee in the natural way, the way boys have done for generations, it is meddling with God's work," Kleppe told the newspaper. "It is a human right not to have to sit down like a girl," Kleppe said. |

Moat haunted (Sep 30 2006 07:44 GMT) - by Claire Smith WITH hundreds of years of feuds, battles, murders, curses and broken love affairs, it is no surprise that Scottish castles have more than their fair share of ghost stories. Whether or not you believe them, the tales of Scotland's haunted castles throw up some fascinating glimpses of the past. Glamis, Angus THE childhood home of the late Queen Mother is sometimes claimed to be the most haunted castle in Scotland. The Grey Lady of Glamis is said to be the ghost of beautiful Janet Duncan, accused of being a witch and tortured, then burned alive by followers of King James V. Today she allegedly wafts around the castle, praying - accompanied by loud knocking noises. |

'Evil spirit' threat to occult classes (Sep 30 2006 07:44 GMT) - by CLARE HAYES Volunteers at the Worle Community Centre have been warned the building will be 'plagued by evil spirits' if plans to start occult classes there go ahead. Congregations at churches in the area have been praying for the committee members and numerous letters have been sent calling for the course to be cancelled. The classes will start at the centre in Lawrence Road on October 2. Occultist Scott Jones will run discussion groups and courses looking at the study and ritual uses of Satanism, meditation, witchcraft and tarot. Despite the controversy caused by the course, centre chairman Joan Thompson says there have been a lot of middle-aged women signing up to take part. |

The witch trials of the past and today (Sep 30 2006 07:44 GMT) - Guantanamo Bay are summer resorts. And the zealots who created it would make the Taliban seem like Unitarians. Its prisoners were kept in total darkness, an absence of hope as well as light. The floor was made of rough stone blocks, and sometimes water from a nearby river would slosh into the underground dungeon, where it would remain - ankle deep - for weeks. There was no heat, and several prisoners froze to death during one terrible winter. |

Stones - Serpentine (Sep 30 2006 07:44 GMT) - "Serpentine helps one understand that gentleness can be strength..." The colors range from white to gray, yellow to green and brown to black and have splotches. The kinds of serpentine usually used in jewelry are bowenite (translucent green or blue-green) and the rarer williamsite (translucent, oily green, veined or spotted with inclusions). Serpentine is found in nearly all mountain ranges throughout the world, it is one of the most readily available and easily carved of all stones. |

The Cailleach Bheara (Sep 30 2006 07:44 GMT) - The Cailleach Bheara, meaning "Old Woman" or "Old Wife," is found widespread throughout both Ireland and Scotland. Many mountains, lakes, and rivers are said to have been created by her. Even some of the cairns are reputed to be piles of stones which fell from her apron. The Cailleach Bheara forms a triple goddess with the Cailleach Bolus and the Cailleach Corca Duibhna. It is said that it was she who let loose the rivers, shaped the mountains, and swung her hammer over the green grasses. |
