Microsoft embraces PHP [Derek Sorensen] (Oct 31 2006 23:23 GMT) - Ok, maybe not embraces, exactly; but Microsoft and Zend have agreed a collaboration deal to improve PHP's performance on Microsoft servers. This is important because until now although PHP has been able to run on Microsoft servers, it's performance hasn't been up to that of Linux, which one reson the PHP world really prefers a LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) environment. One wonders which of the pair will benefit the most from this arrangement. |

Karen Minnis and Big Tobacco (Oct 31 2006 23:23 GMT) - By Patrick Hicks of Portland, Oregon who says he "used to be a Republican until I couldn't stand it anymore." Repeat after me: Minnis helped give the axe To a dime-a-pack cigarette tax. Isn't it funny When they donate big money, It's the cigarette lobby she backs. The cigarette manufacturers are very big campaign contributors in Oregon. |

Yokut or Not (Oct 31 2006 23:21 GMT) - I was doing some reading on Bakersfield history recently and decided to google the Yokut Indians to see what popped up. I learned a long time ago that Yokut was not what the name the Native Americans used for themselves, and in fact it was their word for people. They called themselves Mariposans. So I thought this excerpt from Wikipedia was sort of rude. Most Yokuts Indians reject the name |

Happy Halloween (Oct 31 2006 23:21 GMT) - I stole this from Dusty who stole it from someone else, cuz that what we bloggers do. I'm not so sure my Mom is going to like it, but according to this "What should you be for Halloween" quiz, I should be a pimp. But I forgot to copy the code and paste it in here and when I went back and did it again, answering the questions exactly the same way, this is what I got... Your Halloween Costume |

It's a sick, sad world. (Oct 31 2006 23:21 GMT) - A cat was found tortured and killed in south Bakersfield recently. Psychologists said that parents should be worried about their children?s safety because a person who capable of that type of cruelty may be likely to move on to humans. The cat was found by an 11 year old girl on her way to school. She quickly returned home crying. |

We're #236!! (Oct 31 2006 23:21 GMT) - For the first time in long time a study has come out that doesn't have Bakersfield in the top ten worst cities for _______. In fact, we're not even in the top 100! There are 235 cities out there that are more dangerous than Bakersfield. Finally, something to be proud of! Remind me never to go to any of those other places. |

Jagels Jabberwocky (Oct 31 2006 23:21 GMT) - I can?t help but wonder if Ed Jagels really thinks his new website where he posts his rants is doing him any good. It?s clear his agenda is to smear The Californian as he feels they have smeared him. But what about this article in Rolling Stone? |

Another reason Baseball is better. (Oct 31 2006 23:21 GMT) - I?ll be interesting to see how big this story gets. A fight nearly broke out this weekend when a youth league referee reportedly man handled a 10 year old, pulling him from the bottom of a dog pile, and yelling at him. The boy?s father, a coach for the Northwest Falcons, was nearby and charged the ref, shoving him hard in the chest before being restrained. |

Put the knife down! (Oct 31 2006 23:21 GMT) - Seems like there have been an awful lot of stabbings going on lately. First there was the kid who wasn?t actually stabbed at the BHS football game. Then there was the elderly man found in a hotel room on South Union ? you guessed it, stabbed to death. |

Controversies (Oct 31 2006 23:21 GMT) - There has been a lot of trash talking going on around town lately between writers and bloggers and what not lately. I've kept my mouth shut so far because I don't like to get in the middle of a mess like that. I will say that I'm sorry to see Black Dog gone. The thing I don't get is why some people get so agro over The Bakersfield Californian. They seem to think they have too much power, and |

I thought this was sort of interesting? (Oct 31 2006 23:21 GMT) - I received an email from the Principal of BHS today. He emails announcements and stuff sometimes to parents who sign up to keep us updated. I guess this weekend The Californian ran a story with the headline "Man stabbed during fight at Bakersfield High football game? and Mr. Reese is none too happy about it. |

The Coolest Thing Ever (Oct 31 2006 23:21 GMT) - I went to breakfast at Narduci's this morning to have one those lumberjack meals they make. I love that place. It was 10:30 in the morning and the entire length of the bar was full of older men drinking beer, playing dice and looking like they don't have much to worry about. After we had finished eating Julie, the owner of the place and a lovely person, come over with a peice of cheescake |

Where or Where has Microsoft Podcast Support Gone! (Oct 31 2006 23:21 GMT) - My two year old son was signing the song that starts with Where or Where has my little dog gone. It was about the time I started to reflect on how Microsoft has missed the boat completely on the new Media Evolution. This coupled with how the Zune is crippled in it's non progresiive status quo functionality. My question to those at Microsoft is this who the hell is watching the store? |
