[Slashdot] Forgent Settles JPEG Patent Cases (Nov 02 2006 23:58 GMT) - eldavojohn writes "As many of you know, the JPEG image compression is actually proprietary. This has resulted in many lawsuits between its owner, Forgent Networks, and other companies that have used it. Yesterday Microsoft and about 60 other defendants settled with Forgent to the tune of $8 million. For a company with annual revenues of $15 million, that's nothing to sneeze at. You haven't heard the last of Forgent yet, as the article states, 'It is currently pursuing claims against cable companies over a patent that it says covers technology inside digital video recorders. |

Microsoft supports Linux via Novell; Satan phones Gates regarding temperature (Nov 02 2006 23:57 GMT) - Filed under: Desktops, Laptops It's not exactly official just yet, but the latest word from "people familiar with the companies" being printed up by The Wall Street Journal is sensational enough to run even if we overheard a couple of bums whispering about it on the street. Apparently Microsoft has reached an agreement with Novell, wherein Microsoft will provide sales support to Novell's SUSE Linux operating system. We kid you not. The two lovebirds have also agreed to develop technologies to make dual-boot systems easier to operate, and Microsoft has promised not to assert patent rights over software technology that might show up in SUSE. |

Selon la rumeur, Sony va contre-attaquer en sortant des PSP rose, bleu, et argent avant la fin de l'année. |

Polaroid i1032 Review at DigiCamReview (Nov 02 2006 23:47 GMT) - DigiCamReview - 11/2/2006 - has reviewed the 10 megapixel Polaroid i1032 digital camera and here is their verdict - "The Polaroid i1032 is a quite stylish. It has a lot of manual features available to control picture quality. In this case, the Polaroid i1032 is noticeably let down by the lens, as it produces worrying purple fringing (chromatic aberrations), emphasised when using higher resolutions, so no matter how much post-processing goes on, this aspect of image quality will always be a weak point. Exposure appeared inconsistent, though it was possible to compensate for this with more considered use of the presets or some post processing (the worst photos were left out of the gallery). As the lens design does not support the 10 megapixel CCD resolution, polaroid have failed to capitalise on its benefits, and it performs like a camera with a smaller CCD. |

Canon PowerShot A630 Review at DenGuru (Nov 02 2006 23:47 GMT) - DenGuru - 11/2/2006 - has reviewed the 8 megapixel Canon PowerShot A630 digital camera and they write - "In our tests, we found that the ISO 800 mode added so much noise to the picture that it was practically not usable. And using ISO 800 in a telephoto mode only worsened the apparent noise. We also discovered that while the ISO speed appeared on the information display on the histogram playback view for pictures shot in some, but not all modes, the ISO speed did not get properly recorded into the EXIF file information. We were unable to find the ISO speed that we shot using Photoshop CS2 or Corel Paint Shop Pro. Most other cameras we've reviewed properly insert the ISO speed into the EXIF data. |

It is a much better camera than this more expensive 900. We haven?t tried the 7 megapixel 850, but judging from the performance of the 800 we would expect it to be good. |

Should You Upgrade to the Canon EOS 5D at Camera Labs (Nov 02 2006 23:47 GMT) - Camera Labs - 11/2/2006 - looks at the issue of upgrading to the 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D and here's the verdict - "So the 5D with a decent lens is expensive compared to the next models down in Canon?s range, but those who want high detail with low noise, not to mention one of the best viewfinder experiences in the market will justify the purchase. If it makes it any more palatable, perhaps it?s best to consider the 5D not as expensive compared to the 30D and D200, but a bargain compared to the 1Ds Mark II. |
