Microsoft Zune Review (Nov 28 2006 06:45 GMT) - Zune devices are packaged in Spartan, Apple-like boxes that don't utilize the Microsoft name or logo, unless you look at the small bottom side (likewise, the Zune Web site and advertisements downplay the Microsoft name in startling ways, given the company's name recognition). There was a joke video that made the rounds earlier this year, showing what iPod packaging would look like if Microsoft marketed the device (the video was made, ironically, by a Microsoft employee) and clearly the Zune team was aware of the problem. So the Zune packaging doesn't look anything like a Microsoft product. In fact, it looks exactly like an Apple product. Exactly. |

Security from A to Z: Microsoft (Nov 28 2006 06:45 GMT) - Microsoft's role in unwittingly creating a hole for the security industry to fill cannot be underestimated. By producing an operating system that was ubiquitous and yet, when coupled with the rise of the Internet, all too vulnerable to attack, the software behemoth generated a need that other businesses gladly stepped in to service. For many years an embarrassed Microsoft struggled to up its security credentials--spending money to train its programmers to write more secure software, and launching its so-called Trustworthy Computing Initiative, which focused on improving the security and reliability of its products. This effort even included including conducting "security audits" of software prior to release to nail down as many bugs as possible. |
