Search Over: James Kim Located (Dec 06 2006 23:48 GMT) - In a tragic turn of events putting the two week long man hunt to an end, the body of CNET editor James Kim has been located. The Kim family went missing on November 25, after passing an Interstate 5 turnoff while traveling to the Pacific Northwest for the Thanksgiving holiday. Unfortunately, the route that they chose was closed for the winter and lead the family into the wilderness, where they remained lost for two weeks. Kati Kim, wife of the deceased, told officers that the family had been traveling south from Portland on Interstate 5 and missed the turnoff to a state highway, Oregon 42, that leads through the Coast Range to Gold Beach, where they had been planning to stay in a resort. A private helicopter, hired by family members, located Kati Kim and her two daughters on Monday in good condition. |

Government's Ability To Track Electronic Communications (Dec 06 2006 23:48 GMT) - A press release from FaceTime Communications stopped me cold today. They were promoting their ability to archive, track, and manage electronic communications such as emails, instant messages, and web conferences to comply with new provisions of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure that went into effect this month. This is all new information to me, so I set out to do some research. The Federal Rules of Civil Procedure apparently govern the way that federal courts conduct civil (non-criminal) trials. They try to make sure that similar cases are treated similarly by the courts. |

Removing The Technorati Greasemonkey Script (Dec 06 2006 23:48 GMT) - In response to my previous post about unlimited API queries, I was urged by David Sifry, CEO of Technorati, to contact the Technorati developers and work out a way to get my script working through the API.I then contacted the developer team and got a great fast response from Ian Kallen, and we've been looking together at a way to get this to work without bashing the hell (my words) out of their servers. Up till now that didn't work, and they have asked me to remove the script for now. The official statement: "The query pattern and absence of caching exhibits an operational pattern that we can't presently support. |

SES: SMO Is SEO With PR (Dec 06 2006 23:48 GMT) - As if it needed it, the online world just got another acronym: SMO. Not to be confused with EMO, or the Yiddish pejorative schmo, SMO stands for Social Media Optimization, as introduced to the attendants of the Search Engine Strategies Conference in Chicago.Similar to SEO, SMO applies link and traffic building concepts to the online social networking scene - except with a little more PR built in. At the end of the day, it's not just about traffic, it's about branding and consumer associations. |

Media Linking to Wikipedia Articles (Dec 06 2006 23:48 GMT) - Not sure if this is something new or not, but I just saw a CNN Money article which linked at a Wikipedia article about Joe Kraus as background on him.Given how much the search engines already trust the Wikipedia imagine how much exposure it will be getting if the mainstream media regularly cite it and deep link at their biographies! Just the fact that the mainstream media would link at articles that anyone can edit shows a big shift in power over the last couple years. Comments Tag: Wikipedia, CNN Add to Del. |

Uncertain About Your Website? (Dec 06 2006 23:48 GMT) - One of the biggest reasons my first site failed was because I wrote too much content on it, making it more of an AdSense / spamsense model than a consulting website. But as far as conversions go, a site like Clientside SEM will blow my old Search Marketing website out of the water every time. When selling certain services or products filtering and qualifying leads are just as important as generating leads. What good are a million leads if you can only work on one or two a month? But you usually have to build up quite a bit of brand equity to be lucky enough to be able to be so selective with clients. |

Google Checkout: A Gateway Service? (Dec 06 2006 23:48 GMT) - Earlier this year, Google extended an offer to merchants to take advantage of Google Checkout services for free until the end of the year, a gesture that rival PayPal matched in kind. Tuesday, the company officially extended the offer of free services until December 31, 2007.The move is surely aimed at positioning Google Checkout as a more universally accepted alternative to PayPal as an online payment processor. By extending free processing until the end of 2007, Google hopes that more merchants will take advantage of the service, and by extension, other Google services such as AdSense. Along with the extension of free payment processing, Google also announced the following new features that have been implemented into the Checkout service: |

SES: Maximizing Social Search (Dec 06 2006 23:48 GMT) - The rise of the social network has e-business professionals batting ideas back and forth about how to properly utilize them to draw attention to a service or product. One of the areas explored is social search - where's it headed, what needs to be improved and what people are doing about it.Maximizing Social Search From the Search Engine Strategies conference in Chicago, the session entitled "Social Search Overview" was, according to sources on the scene, just that, with the moderator of the session the only panelist with anything useful to impart. The others, representatives from Google, Yahoo, and Ask.com, seemed to be on more of sales call, plugging their own products rather than talking about the real topic: |

Linked In Doesn't Get It (Dec 06 2006 23:48 GMT) - I've talked with several friends about LinkedIn since the Business 2.0 puff piece profile hit the Web - calling the service "MySpace for Grownups" - and the reaction to the company ranges from puzzled indifference to outright revulsion.Like me, many people seem to have signed up because it seemed like a good thing to do at the time, but have gotten very little out of it except contact requests from people we would much rather not hear from. Is that just a few anti-social people, or a sign of a flawed business model? I would argue it's the latter. |

Edelman Tries PR Microformat (Dec 06 2006 23:48 GMT) - Phil Gomes shares some perspective and insight on Edelman's approach to the Social Media Press Release. My take, generally speaking, is that iterative efforts are a good thing. The more energy and effort we (the PR industry) collectively invest in this concept, the closer we move toward an accepted standard. If, however, we're not all working toward this same goal, and instead get caught up with using proprietary formats and tools to posture and advance competitive agendas, then, sadly, the Social Media Press Release will die, die, die, quickly. [Update] Read Brian Oberkirch's post on the SMPR, he makes some valid counterpoints regarding the approach and execution of this concept to date. |
