One Last Mission for Ship Sunk in Pearl Harbor Attack (Dec 08 2006 22:12 GMT) - Yesterday the Washington Post carried this article detailing efforts to study and preserve the USS Arizona, a war memorial and the grave of more than 1100 sailors. It's estimated the wreck still holds some 500,000 gallons of fuel oil in its remaining bunkers, and scientists want to find out if they can determine when these structures will be in danger of collapsing, and what (if anything) can be done to prevent it. The research should also help in preservation efforts of other shipwrecks all over the world. |

Paxil Five-Year Litigation History (Dec 08 2006 22:12 GMT) - It would be difficult to find a better career than employment as a GlaxoSmithKline attorney, especially if job security is a top priority. Not a year goes by when the company is not doling out millions of dollars to defend against charges involving corporate misconduct of one kind or another. |

Hacking a Moto SLVR into a Makeshift iPhone (Dec 08 2006 22:10 GMT) - Can't wait until January for Apple's cancer-curing mobile communicator? PC Mag has a guide to hack your Moto SLVR into something that's about half as good. The steps involve removing the iTunes 100-song limit, installing a microSD card for more storage, adding a new browser, an Apple-ish skin, and swapping off the faceplate. Sure, this is pretty ghetto and will only fool the most luddite of friends, but it's definitely better than a stock SLVR. – |

You're on fire (Dec 08 2006 22:10 GMT) - You're on fireThere's no salvationFrom this madness, this desireLike a star explosionYou hit us with your secret poisonBaby, please don't stopWe're in such a dark needFill us up, make us bleedRaise your voice to the skyAnd make us fly so dangerously highFlying on borrowed wings Like angels drunken on wineLoving each moment Of this feverish dream of mineI help but wonder if we' |

Kathy Sierra - The Asymptotic Twitter Curve - Creating Passionate Users (Dec 08 2006 22:08 GMT) - I liked this article, but I liked it better near the beginning when I thought Kathy Sierra was making a different point. She begins by looking at Twitter - "A global community of friends and strangers answering one simple question: What are you doing?" - and draws the 'Twitter Curve', mapping the adoption of various technologies with the frequency of interruption. So far so good, but this then wanders into a hackneyed discussion of how interruptions make it hard to get into the flow of things, which we've read a million times before. |

Craig Graham - iLearnium (Dec 08 2006 22:08 GMT) - Oddly named new portal for online learning. Craig Graham writes, "The site features blog aggregation, product ratings and reviews, a discussion forum , and a social networking component - targeted to e-learning professionals." While I applaud the effort, I have to ask whether we need another e-learning portal. Which, of course, raises the question, what do we need? [Link] [Tags: |

I Could Do With A Spot Of Brains (Dec 08 2006 22:07 GMT) - San Francisco's a lovely city, but it would be even nicer if someone did something about this damn zombie issue. Seriously, it's getting to be a real problem. We have no problem with legions of undead who want to swing that way in the privacy of their own homes, but when they insist on peddling their brain-eating smut out in public -- where the children can see! -- tolerating them is just political correctness gone too far. That is why we must urge you in the strongest possible terms NOT to convene on Yerba Buena Gardens (y'know, the Metreon's grassy backyard) at 2: |

Does anybody watch the Military Channel? (Dec 08 2006 22:04 GMT) - I've been checking it out recently - they have really excellent programming, I have to say. It's educational without being boring. I think I'm enjoying the My War Diary show the most - I like that the soldiers themselves are making and submitting the content for it. Feels more real. Anybody else... |
