Ebola-outbreak kills 5000 gorillas (Dec 08 2006 23:36 GMT) - The study also provides new hope for controlling the devastating impact of Ebola on wild gorilla and chimpanzee populations. Since reports of ape die-offs first circulated widely in 2003, sceptics have doubted how large these die-offs were and whether Ebola was even the cause. The new study, led by Magdalena Bermejo of the University of Barcelona, allays these doubts because it was conducted in a closely monitored gorilla population where genetic tests confirmed Ebola as the cause of death. Bermejo and colleagues from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology and Uppsala University first showed that 93% (221 of 238) individually known gorillas at the Lossi Sanctuary in northwest Congo were killed by Ebola during outbreaks in 2002 and 2003. They then used transect surveys to show that 95% gorilla mortality rates extended over a much larger area of several thousand square kilometres. |

Kodak EasyShare C433 Review - DigitalCameraInfo (Dec 08 2006 23:33 GMT) - DigitalCameraInfo - 12/8/2006 - has reviewed the Kodak EasyShare C433 and here's their verdict - "For consumers looking to enter the digital camera market without spending several hundred dollars and being overwhelmed by controls, dials, buttons and features, the Kodak EasyShare C433 provides a compelling argument for the budget-conscious photographer. Employing a 1/2.5-inch, 4-megapixel CCD, 3x optical zoom lens, 1.8-inch LCD, preset still shooting modes and manual influence over longer shutter speed, exposure compensation, white balance presets and ISO, this camera does the job with competence. Canon PowerShot A640 Review - DigitalCameraReview (Dec 08 2006 23:33 GMT) - DigitalCameraReview - 12/8/2006 - reviews the 10 megapixel Canon PowerShot A640 digital camera and they write - "I generally prefer using an optical finder, which the A640 does provide, but the A640 also has a 2.5 inch Vari-Angle LCD monitor. This makes grab shots or quick snapshots easy, and also simplifies close-ups and self-portraits. The LCD can be turned back to face the subject and show a non-reversed image and the self timer set. No more shots of the photographer not quite making it into the family picture! |

Nikon D40 - Time Mag Gadget of the Week (Dec 08 2006 23:33 GMT) - Time Magazine's - 12/8/2006 - Wilson Rothman has chosen the 6 megapixel Nikon D40 as the Gadget of the Week and indicates this new DSLR from Nikon might teach you a thing or two - "The D40 is also an editor. Once, I was shooting at a high-school graduation, and I realized halfway through that a setting was making my pictures too dim. When I got home, I had to adjust them in Photoshop Elements. If I make the same blunder on the D40, I could lighten up the shots right on the camera, which saves the edited image as a separate file, in case you don't like the fix. This is helpful not just when you're clumsy, as I was, but when you say, shoot in low light and want to edit out the yellowish cast that always appears, or if you shoot something wide and think it would look better cropped. |

It is about average for 10MP compacts in terms of picture quality, with good colour and exposure but poor noise control and some optical problems. Build quality, weatherproof durability, performance and ease of use are all good, but let down by poor low light focusing. The 6400 ISO setting is pretty much useless, but the Perfect Fix feature is very handy. It? |
