Dora, the world's largest railway gun (Dec 09 2006 23:55 GMT) - Schwerer Gustav and Dora were the names under which the German 80cm K (E) railway guns were known. They were developed in the late 1930s by Krupp in order to destroy large, heavily fortified targets. They weighed nearly 1,344 tons, and could fire a shell that weighed more than 7 tons at distances up to 37 km. Designed in preparation for World War II, they were intended to be used against the Maginot Line but instead of a frontal assault the Wehrmacht outflanked the line during the Battle of France. One of the guns was used in Russia at the siege of Sevastopol during Operation Barbarossa. |

Public Shaming of Prostitutes Misfires in China (Dec 09 2006 23:55 GMT) - BEIJING -- To local officials combating Shenzhen's reputation as a den of vice, it seemed like a good idea, the perfect way to dissuade provincial girls from turning to prostitution in the big city and frighten away the men who patronize their brothels. So after raiding the karaoke bars, saunas and barbershops where prostitutes often ply their trade, police officers in the southern Chinese boomtown paraded about 100 women and their alleged johns in the street, using loudspeakers to read out their names and the misdeeds they were accused of committing. News photographers snapped away while thousands of residents lined up to take in the show. |

For your car’s global warming performance, check the sticker (Dec 09 2006 23:55 GMT) - I’m writing this column in longhand with a pen Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell used to sign a pioneering clean car bill. In a measure previously taken only in California that provides a model for the entire nation, Connecticut will now require cars sold in the state to display a window label disclosing how much global warming gas (primarily carbon dioxide, or CO2) they emit. It’s a measure we may see echoed soon in other states that follow California emission laws, including New York, Maine, Vermont, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. |

On the tragedy of being a woman and unfunny (Dec 09 2006 23:54 GMT) - I have to seriously adjust my view of reality. It turns out I am probably not funny. It's because I'm a woman. Nothing to do with being a feminist, either. It's an absolute relief to know that I have been misinterpreting humour all my life and that the reason for this is beyond my control. |
