Candle that burns on both ends (Dec 11 2006 06:38 GMT) - The Self-Destructo Candle is another everyday household item that has received an infusion of modern technology, making it one that is capable of burning on both ends by throwing in an LED bulb on one end along with a wick on the other. The LED will burn bright as long as you have a fresh supply of batteries, but should you ever get bored of synthetic light, just flip the Self-Destructo Candle over, trim the wick, and light it up. Hopefully there is some form of safety mechanism that prevents the battery or LED to explode as the wick burns through the night. Available for $37 each, the Self-Destructo Candle is definitely not cheap, but it will make an interesting piece of home decoration. |

The Nave concept all-round camera (Dec 11 2006 06:30 GMT) - The Nave from NEC is a conceptual take on a 360-degree Visual Communication Device that will definitely render the video phone obsolete should it ever go into mass production. Everyday visual communications from a distance are limited to the types of display devices and terminals used, but the Nave changes all that by providing a feed of the surrounding environment for the perfect group-to-group communication via a round display and a central super-wide angle camera. The Nave is still a concept design by NEC, and you will most probably never see it make an appearance as a commercial unit, but it is still great to see companies taking the initiative to think out of the box in order to advance the electronics industry on the whole. |

Robotic Lobster scours for mines (Dec 11 2006 06:24 GMT) - If there's one crustacean the Crustastun device cannot kill, it would be this robotic lobster that is currently being showcased at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. This unique robot lobster was designed to crawl along the bottom of coastal areas very much like their living counterparts, and instead of searching for some grub to eat, they monitor the environment and search for wayward mines instead. The robot lobsters were constructed based on the actual behavior and neurophysiology of live lobsters, with the biomimetic design perfectly suited for life underwater. I guess there really isn't any reason to reinvent the wheel, and looking toward nature as the drawing board is always the best way to go. |
