Keep music varied (Dec 13 2006 05:00 GMT) - For several semesters now, the Rutgers College Program Council has done a good job representing the interests of varied students and in providing for varied musical tastes. Concerts featured Trey Songz and Gavin DeGraw, the Beatnuts and Death Cab for Cutie. |

A Look Back (Dec 13 2006 05:00 GMT) - The past semester has been a tumultuous one, to say the least. It has been a semester of transformation for the University, rocky at times, with both good and bad changes. From the overwhelming success of the football team, to the widespread impact of the state budget cuts, to the looming consolidation of the liberal arts colleges, it seems no part of Rutgers has been untouched by the hand of change. |

Cutting our rights? (Dec 13 2006 05:00 GMT) - In "Cutting the Fat" on Dec. 7, Kian Barry declares that Americans' freedom and individual choice were quashed on Dec. 5 with New York City's Board of Health's decision to ban the use of artificial trans fats in city restaurants. He claims the board has set a precedent for government agencies to begin micromanaging its citizens' lives. |

Wrong time for a new logo (Dec 13 2006 05:00 GMT) - I find it highly irritating this University - of which I have been a student now for four years - continues to dabble in petty and wasteful activities, like redesigning logos and remodeling the College Avenue campus. Instead of making sure the non-academic workers will be secure in their jobs, fixing all of the unsafe and unsanitary living conditions on Livingston campus and ensuring academic and athletic programs are preserved - we get a new logo. |

Voting matters (Dec 13 2006 05:00 GMT) - I wish I could say I cared about Ed Fu's latest article on Dec. 5 about the North Korean genocide. Not because I do not believe that North Korea is undergoing genocide or that it does not deserves attention - far from it. Except that Fu also wrote an article with the asinine title "Voting is Illogical," - where he did not vote, was not upset about not voting and did not see the point in doing so. |

Elimination of sports is unjustified (Dec 13 2006 05:00 GMT) - Here's a quiz in light of University Board of Governors Chairman Al Gamper's latest statement that eliminating the men's and women's fencing team is justified. "Where we don't have a chance to be number one in certain academic areas, we eliminate those areas - same thing with sports," Gamper said Which Rutgers team has: 32 individual All-American awards over the past 20 year; an individual National Collegiate Athletic Association champion in 2003 - perhaps Rutgers' only one over the past 20 years - and a total of six individual NCAA championship performances; at least one NCAA finalist for each of the past 20 years; |

US takes a stand against genocide (Dec 13 2006 05:00 GMT) - The United States had done a lot of good and bad over the course of its history as a nation, this includes fighting against genocide. Ed Fu's comment about how the United States has never intervened to stop genocide is extremely inaccurate. May I point to the three conflicts in the last 15 years that the US has taken a stand for: Somalia, Bosnia and Kosovo. |

Desperate Times and Distorted Measures (Dec 13 2006 05:00 GMT) - Bosnian Fat Dog By: Max Andersson & Lars Sjunnesson Publisher: Fantagraphics Books Grade: A I've read a lot of comics and thought a lot about their possibilities. Bosnian Flat Dog is not like any comic I've read before and it goes beyond many thoughts I've had concerning the medium. |

"Law and Murder: The NYPD Murder of Sean Bell" (Dec 13 2006 05:00 GMT) - One of the most disgusting incidents in the news recently is the New York Police Department shooting murder of Sean Bell, and the shootings of his two friends as well, Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield. There are many people in our country...including my own family members and even some acquaintances who deny the existence and the pervasiveness of racism in the United States today. |

"Terrorists would overrun an unarmed area" (Dec 13 2006 05:00 GMT) - In "Refugee discusses Gaza Strip conflict" (12/6/06), the invited speaker's distortions inadvertently show one of the reasons why the conflict continues. People willing to lie about or completely misread the situation cannot help to solve it. Let's be real: Despite what the speaker said, Israel has actually been more willing to release Palestinian prisoners who had murdered Jews than the few Jewish prisoners that had murdered Palestinians. |

U bus system deserves praise (Dec 13 2006 05:00 GMT) - I am writing in response to the article "Bus Delays Prompt Some to Miss Classes" (Daily Targum, December 5, 2006). As a long-time member of the Rutgers University community, who commutes daily from New York City, and relies exclusively on walking and the campus bus system to get around campus, I must come its defense. |

Ohio Senate Passes Bill Requiring Insurers To Cover Mental Illnesses (Dec 13 2006 05:00 GMT) - The Ohio Senate on Tuesday voted 26-5 to approve a bill that would require health insurers in the state to offer the same coverage for mental illness as they do for physical ailments, the AP/Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. The bill would prevent health insurers from discriminating in their coverage of the diagnosis, care and treatment of mental illnesses, according to the AP/Plain Dealer.
