My opinion Garrison Keillor : A Christmas newsletter from a modest Minnesotan (Dec 14 2006 14:57 GMT) - I love reading Christmas newsletters in which the writer bursts the bonds of modesty and comes forth with one gilt-edged paragraph after another: "Tara was top scorer on the Lady Cougars soccer team and won the lead role in the college production of 'Antigone,' which by the way they are performing in the original Greek. Her essay on chaos theory as an investment strategy will be in the next issue of Fortune magazine, the same week she'll appear as a model in Vogue. How she does what she does and still makes Phi Beta Kappa is a wonderment to us all. And, yes, she is still volunteering at the homeless shelter. |

Market Summary (Dec 14 2006 14:57 GMT) - Wall Street ended a volatile session marginally higher Wednesday after stocks first surged on robust retail sales numbers but pared their gains as oil prices spiked. The Energy Department reported crude inventories fell for the third straight week, which sent oil and gasoline prices sharply higher. Less supply means both oil and gas could cost more, and that was viewed as an obstacle to consumer spending. The supplies data essentially offset a robust retail sales report that showed strong consumer spending in November. Investors had sent stocks higher on belief higher household spending will drive corporate profits and push economic growth. |

Question of the Week (Dec 14 2006 14:57 GMT) - "We have been very busy, even busier than last year. Sales are really strong, and we're doing really well. We brought in a lot of Swiss watch lines this year, and that's making a big difference. We're busy all year long but around Christmas time, it's an especially busy time for us. Sales, overall, are better this year. |
