The future of research journals and peer-review (Dec 14 2006 23:25 GMT) - via Langreiter a commentary at the Journal of Neuroscience speculates on the future of research journals and peer-review: Research studies appear on databases, not in journals First, I don't think that it makes any sense to continue with paper copies of research articles. Instead of the "quasi-legal" document that is the current scientific article, we should be moving to full data being available on the web together with the software that might have been used to manipulate the data, as well as multimedia presentations to back up the data. Research papers are primarily of interest to other researchers in the same area, and they usually don't need the introduction and certainly not the discussion, which mostly degenerates to hype anyway ... If an absence of peer review (or post-publication review, as I call it) is a step too far, then we should have an author (or rather funder) pays model. |

Soliciting your thoughts/opinions (Dec 14 2006 23:24 GMT) - I'm developing something interesting in the general web which possibly could be of use to adult webmasters. So I thought I'd come here and ask what you think. I know free adult web hosts are pretty much dead, mostly replaced by hosted galleries but... * What about a host that has an AJAX front end so there's an FTP emulator built into the website with drag and drop, as well as a WYSIWYG html editor also built into the interface. * No need for an FTP program or an editor, it would all be online. |

[Slashdot] Homeland Security Director Defends Real ID (Dec 14 2006 23:22 GMT) - An anonymous reader writes "Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff is defending the upcoming rollout of the national ID card as vital for the nation's security. Chertoff reminded reporters of the importance of the initiative after this week's uncovering of an ID-forging ring. The Real ID Act of May 2005 dictates the uses and requirements for the documentation, which by 2008 may be required for everything from travel to banking. Just the same, the HSD has yet to dictate how exactly the cards will work. " From the article: |

[Techdirt] DRM-Free Music Sells, Major Labels Keep Pretending The Jury Is Still Out (Dec 14 2006 23:21 GMT) - The idea that DRM-free music might just make good business sense smolders along, as eMusic is announcing they've managed to sell 100 million unprotected songs without the world coming to an end. As part of the promotion, the customer who purchased the milestone track will have a song written about him by the Barenaked Ladies, who'll include the song on as a bonus track for their upcoming album. The record labels have consistently claimed you can't be successful selling music that isn't copy-protected -- but eMusic's second place showing (behind iTunes) shows that's clearly not the case. They continue to sell more music than Rhapsody, Napster and MSN Music combined, all while catering to indie music fans by avoiding major label content. 2006 saw a growth in smaller content providers arguing that DRM-free content can be part of a sustainable business model, but there's still a shortage of major industry players acknowledging DRM's limitations. |
