The Balm of Obama (Dec 21 2006 23:25 GMT) - Obama's name is booming around the country. His impact grows as he writes, speaks and appears on talk shows. He is a rare political phenomenon, complimented by both Republican and Democratic leaders and pundits. The main objection to his running for president seems to be his lack of experience. Now I read that Michael Tomasky, the brilliant editor at large of the American Prospect, thinks that now is the best time for Senator Barack Obama to run.... |

Bigger Military or Better Strategy (Dec 21 2006 23:25 GMT) - Our commander-in-chief says that we need a bigger military in order to win the "war on terror," which will be a long war. Maybe we do need more troops to fight in various areas of the world. But what we need more than troops is a way to win the hearts and minds of Muslims and others who hate us. Instead of beefing up the Department of Defense, we should beef up the Department of State so that we may talk, discuss, negotiate... |

Foolish Fear (Dec 21 2006 23:25 GMT) - Two years from now, terrorists under the banner of the "Progressive Restoration" will take over Manhattan in a larger attempt to overthrow the government. Thirteen years later, President Chelsea Clinton and Vice President Michael Moore will haul out the good White House china for Osama bin Laden's state visit. By fiddling with your radio, you may be able to catch an underground broadcast by Sean Hannity. If you own a radio, that is; folks living in states that are under Sharia law won't even be that lucky. |

Obama for President (Dec 21 2006 23:25 GMT) - Back in October, I was touting Barack Obama as a great Democratic star. Since then Obama has been shining with beautiful brilliance, a brilliance so great that he seems to put all other Democratic candidates in a deep shadow. I see and appreciate his unifying light. I think he will make a great president, one that will restore this country's luster... |

Heckling Pelosi (Dec 21 2006 23:25 GMT) - There is a new pastime for journalists: heckling Pelosi. Since the Democrats won the election and it became clear that Nancy Pelosi was going to be the new Speaker of the House, she has been heckled mercilessly. I can understand why Republicans do this. But why on earth should Democrats, who have been in the wilderness for a long time, knock, denigrate and set obstacles in the path of their newly elected leader? |

New Era of Sustainable Energy (Dec 21 2006 23:25 GMT) - On Sunday, I read an interesting article titled "Rebuilding the Middle Class," by Joel Kotkin and David Friedman, in which they say that we can gain good jobs and thereby resurrect the Middle Class, through a big project of rebuilding our decaying infrastructure. This set me thinking that maybe we need more than a renovated infrastructure. We need a redesigned infrastructure to accommodate the coming new era of sustainable energy.... |

Switching Off Free Speech (Dec 21 2006 23:25 GMT) - The most important ideal of America is free speech. Free speech is promised us in the first amendment in the Bill of Rights. All Americans, whether they be Democrats, Republicans, members of any other political party, or completely independent of any party, are in favor of free speech. Free speech is part of America's DNA. And yet, here comes Newt Gingrich telling us that sometimes we need to switch off free speech!... |

Republicans are Still Swiftboating (Dec 21 2006 23:25 GMT) - You would think that once the election has passed and the Republicans have received their drubbing, they would change their tune. No way. Republicans are still writing articles, not about anything one would call an issue, but merely to denigrate and to defame the character of Democrats. They are swiftboating those scheduled to be elevated to powerful positions. Nancy Pelosi, for instance.... |

Transfer Taxing (Dec 21 2006 23:25 GMT) - NAFTA, the free trade agreement among the U.S., Canada and Mexico, was touted as a big gift to business and to labor in all three countries. Punish Employee Dumping (Dec 21 2006 23:25 GMT) - Corporations who dump employees and then transfer their jobs overseas are un-American. They get away with it because they are big and powerful. Furthermore, our federal tax system encourages multinationals to open factories in low wage countries such as China and India. We encourage employee dumping when we should punish it.... |

Dumping Employees (Dec 21 2006 23:25 GMT) - Outsourcing? I can understand outsourcing to mean going outside the country to buy nuts and bolts - assuming that good nuts and bolts are not available for a decent price in the U.S. And if you want to save money, you can buy, or outsource, screws. But outsourcing workers? |

Democrats Are on the March (Dec 21 2006 23:25 GMT) - Democrats are on the march in January. Immediately after the year-end holiday season, on Thursday, January 4, 2007, the new Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi plans to keep the House in session throughout January in order to get a good head start in enacting the legislative priorities in The First 100 Hour program.... |

Restoring American Values (Dec 21 2006 23:25 GMT) - In addition to Nancy Pelosi's 6 legislative broadsides - which include ethics legislation - during the first 100 legislative hours of the new Congress, there will be lots more legislation calculated to repair the giant rip in our flag produced by the Republican Congress. Among the unAmerican laws Republicans passed, Democrats are sure to modify the act that effectively makes torture legal.... |

First 100 Hours (Dec 21 2006 23:25 GMT) - Nancy Pelosi, the House speaker-to-be, is eager to hit the ground running in the new Congress to produce legislation that helps the typical American, not merely the rich and the elite. This is why she has listed her 6 top priorities that she wants to get enacted during the first 100 hours of legislative activity.... |

Pelosi, Hip Hip Hooray! (Dec 21 2006 23:25 GMT) - Nancy Pelosi, you did a terrific job helping Democrats get elected to the House. Hip hip hooray! You did such an outstanding job as House minority leader that Democrats elected you Speaker. Hip hip hooray! Some pundits think you pulled a booboo by recommending Jack Murtha for second in command and losing. |

Second Life avatars consume as much electricity as Brazilians (Dec 21 2006 23:25 GMT) - From 3Dpoint Nick Carr calculates that a Second Life avatar consumes as much electricity as a Brazilian: If there are on average between 10,000 and 15,000 avatars "living" in Second Life at any point, that means the world has a population of about 12,500. Supporting those 12,500 avatars requires 4,000 servers as well as the 12,500 PCs the avatars' physical alter egos are using. Conservatively, a PC consumes 120 watts and a server consumes 200 watts. |

Lots of finger-tapping deliciousness (Dec 21 2006 23:25 GMT) - Finger tapping is a very fast guitar technique in which the picking hand is used to "tap" individual notes on the fretboard, while the fretting hand can either remain stationary or be used to do hammer-ons/pull-offs to create even faster playing. Popularized in rock music by Eddie van Halen (YT, great visual example) in the late 1970's, the technique has become almost essential for speed/metal guitar players. Although finger tapping has been dismissed as " |
