New Program by Computer Scientist Prevents Crashes and Hacker Attacks (Dec 26 2006 21:58 GMT) - Today`s computers have more than 2,000 times as much memory as the machines of yesteryear, yet programmers are still writing code as if memory is in short supply. Not only does this make programs crash annoyingly, but it also can make users vulnerable to hacker attacks, says computer scientist Emery Berger from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. |

Making Bush Pay For It (Dec 26 2006 21:52 GMT) - For the last several weeks I have been advocating for the incoming Democratic committee chairmen to force Bush to pay for his foreign policy. I am happy to note today that the incoming chairs of the House and Senate budget committees are in fact sending out the word that Democrats will aim to balance the budget by 2012, and plan to force Bush to identify as part of the restoration of the "pay-as-you-go" budget rules how he plans to pay for his Iraq escalation and troop increases to the armed forces. Note that John Spratt in the House and Kent Conrad in the Senate are talking about tax fairness and helping the middle class, which is codespeak for undoing some of Bush's boondoggles for Corporate America and allowing the upper income tax cuts to expire at the end of this decade, as well as reevaluating the capital gains and dividend tax cuts. The administration argues now that the deficit isn't really an issue anymore, since they have broken open the Social Security lockbox and looted the trust fund to pay for Bush's tax breaks for his rich friends and corporate checkwriters and masking the true costs of those revenue drains. But Democrats will be able to frame the tax and deficit debate as a choice between Bush's status quo that benefits the wealthy to the detriment of seniors and working Americans, or making everyone pay their fair share to support our country, its troops, and our communities. |

To Think About Doing: New Year's Eve (Dec 26 2006 21:50 GMT) - You know, as we've been sitting here doing these posts all day, we've all collectively been wondering where we're gonna go this New Year's Eve to get our douche on. This has been a slow day, and we've all been distracted by thoughts of "the party," and where "it's at." Lord knows "the party" is the most important thing in New York these days, and if you don't know where "it's at," then you're pretty much fucked. Thankfully, we now know where "the party is at." Virtual Meals Let You Pig Out with Distant Relatives (Dec 26 2006 21:42 GMT) - The Virtual Family Dinner was created so that friends and family separated by distance could enjoy "virtual" dinners together. A TV, speakers, camera and mic capture you on one end while a similar set up does the same on the other. The concept is designed to keep the elderly from eating alone. It's expected to roll out in a year for roughly $500 to $1,000, though for that money you could just buy a low-end PC and set them up with some videoconferencing. – |

Gold Seeker Closing Report: Gold & Silver Find Decent Gains in Thin Trade (Dec 26 2006 21:38 GMT) - Gold opened a few dollars higher in Asia on Monday and remained higher until the open in New York today which took it nearly $10 higher from last Friday’s close up near $630 before it fell back off into the close, but it still ended with a decent gain. Silver rose up near $12.75 before it too fell off into the close, but it still ended with a respectable gain as well. |

International Forecaster MidWeek Reading - Gold, Silver, Economy + More (Dec 26 2006 21:38 GMT) - In Thursday’s gold market the word is two central banks sold 25 tons of gold on 12/15. This was the reason for the $12 drop. The gold was all sold during the Comex – not at the London fixings. It’s obvious the gold was sold in this manner to make a major negative impact on the market. North Korea was one of those sellers and to have sold in that manner tells us they had to have been in collusion with the Fed. |

The Resource Sectors of Energy and Metals (Dec 26 2006 21:38 GMT) - The breakdown in the resource sectors this week has postponed the continuation of the resource bull market. Whether this is a legit breakdown or just a false break, we don’t know. The prudent thing to do is to close all existing positions and watch from the sideline. We can always buy back, but I will never allow myself or any subscribers to suffer a double digit drawdown. |

A Mission for Further Economic Ruin (Dec 26 2006 21:38 GMT) - I see where the Republicrat congresscritters in Washington are pounding on their desks, insisting that the minimum wage be hiked so they can brag they've done something for the working man. Meantime, a high-profile U.S. delegation led by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke arrived in Beijing Dec. 13 for a landmark Sino-American "strategic economic dialogue, aimed at examining long-term strategic issues in bilateral trade. |

Councilman Peter Vallone: Killjoy of the Year (Dec 26 2006 21:35 GMT) - We've got to hand it to Queens Councilman Peter Vallone: Never has one politician advanced more ridiculous, attention-getting legislation. He's the one who got his panties all in a bunch over graffiti and wants to jail parents if their kids are caught drinking. Now he wants to overturn a state law that bans dog breed-specific legislation in order to ban pit bulls in New York City. Vallone himself has a bichon frise, which as everyone knows, is a total pussy dog, so we can't say that we're completely surprised about his proposal. |
