Hermetic graffiti (Dec 30 2006 08:57 GMT)

- By Sol I?ve recently chanced on an excellent scholarly article, with a deep and intelligent analysis of the possible esoteric origins of some very curious hermetic markings on a Valladolid Cathedral manuscript. The writer, Professor E.W Vogt of Seattle Pacific University, makes several highly enlightening and original deductions, for example on the connection between the Masonic "Tri-Tau" cross and the IHS emblem, as well as many important observations upon the influence and interrelationship between esoteric schools of thought and arcane societies, and the article is a must-read for any serious aficionado of Medieval alchemy and symbolism.

He is also a recognized expert on Italian witchcraft and the foremost authority on the works of Charles Godfrey Leland in this particular field. Grimassi is also the Directing Elder of the Arician Tradition, a system of Italian witchcraft Raven Grimassi was born in 1951 to an Italian immigrant who came to the United States as a War Bride in 1946. At an early age he began to study the folklore and witchcraft of Italy, the Old Religion of Italy's past. Experiences of a Pagan Practicing Pranic Healing (Dec 30 2006 08:57 GMT)

- by Robert Mark O. Lauzon My exposure to the Old Religion and to the Earth-based Religion also exposed me to tried and true healing techniques involving herbs, oils and some other shamanic rites. Most of these techniques did not ritualize a systematic division of bodies and/or energy centers. They did contain elements of 'energy centers,' invisible bodies, but did not name these areas nor try to concentrate on one aspect of each. Needless to say, it still made a whole lot of sense and, yes (!

Achieving Our Spiritual Goals (Dec 30 2006 08:57 GMT)

- by Fiona Blackwolf As we move into the New Year, people all over are making resolutions, setting goals and talking about changing their lives for the better. But how can we ensure that we follow through on those plans? Too often plans, really good plans, get tossed aside within a month or two. Obviously, we have the desire to make these changes, but how can we make sure that we achieve the goals we have set for ourselves? The first step is to really think about what it is we truly desire.

Akitu (the New Year Festival) and Newruz (Nuroz) (Dec 30 2006 08:57 GMT)

- By Fred Aprim Many nationalities, ethnic and religious groups in the Near/Middle East and Central Asia, like the Assyrians, Persians, Afghanis, Kurds, and Baha'is celebrate the arrival of spring season. This occasion, mostly celebrated on March 21 (for Baha'is will be then on the 22nd since their day starts at sunset), represent the beginning of these groups' national calendar and their own new year. However, since the Kurds of Iraq have aroused suspicion by politicizing this ancient tradition, which is not theirs to start with, it was important to explore and differentiate between the myth from one hand and the historical and traditional accounts from the other. The Akitu festival is one of the oldest recorded religious festivals in the world, celebrated for several millennia throughout ancient Mesopotamia.

Witchcraft research in Vardų (Dec 30 2006 08:57 GMT)

- by Marko Nenonen About 100 researchers into witchcraft from all over the world will congregate in Vardų next year to discuss the witch trials in the Finnmark, North-West Russia and Central Europe. Midnight Sun Witchcraft Conference 2007 is being co-funded by the Nordic Cultural Fund. The witch hunt in Vardų in the 17th century was exceptionally ruthless and brutal, and themes like human rights, terror and religious tolerance were just as topical in a geo-political context then as they are now. Researchers from all over the world will meet in Vardų at midsummer to discuss witch trials, witch burning and witch hunts in a historic perspective as part of a project by the universities of Tromsų, Oslo, Helsinki and Tampere. The conference, which is also supported by the business community and the local authority in Vardų, has received a DKK 50,000 grant from the Nordic Cultural Fund.

When is a Celt not a Celt? (Dec 30 2006 08:57 GMT)

- An Irreverent peek into Neopagan views of history by Joanna Hautin-Mayer In this essay I intend to examine a number of books that have been published recently on Celtic mythology, Druidry, and various forms of "Celtic Wicca" with an eye to their historical veracity. While I appreciate that the value of the metaphysical often cannot be quantified by means of such documentation, I feel that it is essential to use critical analysis in examining any magical system which claims to have an historical basis. History is usually written by the winners. This fact becomes obvious to anyone who has ever made a study of the subject. Many Neopagans and Wiccans feel at odds with written history in general because they consider it to be "patriarchal" and highly biased.

Chief: Aboriginal frustrations could mount in 2007 (Dec 30 2006 08:57 GMT)

- CHINTA PUXLEY -- Canada should brace for more dramatic displays of aboriginal defiance in 2007, warn native leaders who say the First Nations frustrations that boiled over in a small Ontario town this year may well be a tipping point for decades of simmering aboriginal anger. It was in the bedroom community of Caledonia, Ont., which borders the massive Six Nations reserve in southwestern Ontario, where that anger seeped quietly into a nondescript, half-finished housing development on land the protesters claimed as their own.

Hogmanay (Dec 30 2006 08:57 GMT)

- Of course, the people continued to celebrate, prohibition being a powerful incentive to rebel, and there are stories of those who hid the roast goose under the bed when the minister called. Attention moved, though, to the 'hinner end o' Yule' and to New Year's Night, untainted by the Church of Rome therefore religiously more acceptable to the narrow-minded church hierarchy. What happened was an amalgam of the old festivities of Christmas, Yule and Twelfth Night or Epiphany into what has now become known as Hogmanay. From its early beginnings, and up to the early 20th century, it brought together the forbidden customs from older festivals, and the new celebration took a strong grip on the emotions of the Scottish people, which shows little sign of abating. A possible derivation of the name, according to the Scottish National Dictionary, is from the French aguillanneuf, a street cry for gifts on New Year's Day.

Pagan View of the Afterlife (Dec 30 2006 08:57 GMT)

- Terri Paajanen Not all Pagans have the same views of what happens after death. I have found when people are curious about my religion, one of the first things they ask is "What do you believe happens when you die?" Before I begin, I would just like to point out that there is no set doctrine among Wiccans when it comes to the details of the afterlife. Some other Pagan paths do have a more specific mythology in this regard, which I mention at the end of this article. Most Wiccans believe in reincarnation.

Greek island's riddle (Dec 30 2006 08:57 GMT)

- Unlike its larger, postcard-perfect neighbors in the Aegean Sea, Keros is a tiny rocky dump inhabited by a single goatherd. But the barren islet was of major importance to the mysterious Cycladic people, a sophisticated pre-Greek civilization with no written language that flourished 4,500 years ago and produced strikingly modern-looking artwork. More than half of all documented Cycladic figurines in museums and collections worldwide were found on Keros. Now, excavations by a Greek-British archaeology team have unearthed a cache of prehistoric statues -- all deliberately broken -- that they hope will help solve the Keros riddle. When they were unearthed, the white marble shards were jumbled close together like a pile of bleached bones, an elbow here, a leg there, occasionally a head.

Missing Nepali 'Buddha Boy' (Dec 30 2006 08:57 GMT)

Pardon urged for Scot jailed for witchcraft (Dec 30 2006 08:57 GMT)

- by ALISON CHIESA A national petition was launched yesterday in support of a pardon for Britain's last convicted witch. The Prestoungrange Arts Festival in Prestonpans is organising the petition on behalf of Helen Duncan, a Scot who was imprisoned for witchcraft in 1944. Three years ago, the East Lothian village pardoned 81 local men and women killed during the witchcraft trials of the 16th and 17th centuries. The pardons were granted by the Barons Courts of Prestoungrange and Dolphinstoun, just before the abolition of ancient feudal laws. Mrs Duncan, however, was convicted outwith Prestonpans and under the modern judiciary, so it was not in the Barons' power to include her in the posthumous pardons.

Gateways to Reality (Dec 30 2006 08:57 GMT)

- by Lilly Fluger There are realities within realities, and your choice of what might be called "the curiosity focus of attention" attracts such a reality and brings it to subjective prominence. However, in all circumstances, your current experience has gateways leading to other realities. These doorways are mental focal points perceived within your three-dimensional physical environment such as an object, a breeze, another individual or an event. Generally these are overlooked because they are so obvious, and also because of man's lack of understanding of his oneness with his surroundings. As Seth taught, "you get what you concentrate upon," and this has an infinite and expansive depth of meaning because, quite literally, your concentration is the mental analog of propulsion.

The Ancient Custom of Mummery (Dec 30 2006 08:57 GMT)

- Mummery is as ancient as man's dream of getting outside of his customary life; it is as old as man's imagination. Tracing back through the mazes of history that led to England and Germany, to ancient France, pagan Rome and Greece, we find mummery has influenced customs and perpetuated many interesting traditions. Every nation had its festivals at one time or another, each marked by parades and displays of fanciful costumes. The mummers continued to celebrate annually in their traditional way.

Handfasting: As Forever As You Want To Be (Dec 30 2006 08:57 GMT)

- In this age of quickie marriage and instantaneous divorce, the ancient tradition of handfasting makes more sense than ever. Handfasting is a binding commitment between two loving persons that requires no bureaucratic licensing to begin and no lawyers to undo. To those that choose to handfast, the commitment is as deep and binding as anything cooked up by City Hall. Indeed, a handfast can last forever, so long as love remains. Even death cannot end a handfasted union;

EU Proposes CO2 Emission Quotas For Airlines (Dec 30 2006 08:57 GMT)

- Brussels (AFP) Dec 20, 2006 The European Commission proposed Wednesday to set carbon dioxide emission quotas for airlines from 2011, a stance already met with hostility by the aviation industry and environmentalists. The proposal, which still has to be adopted by EU member states and the European Parliament, would see emissions rules imposed from 2011 on intra-European flights and from 2012 for flights originating outside the bloc. It would cover both EU and foreign aircraft operators and the quotas would be based on emission levels from last year.

Eclecticism vs Tradition (Dec 30 2006 08:57 GMT)

- by Jason Pitzl-Waters One fact that hasn't sunk in too deeply to those on the outside looking in on modern Paganism is that our culture includes many different points of view on the topic of spiritual eclecticism. While some groups and individuals feel free to incorporate "whatever works", others try very hard to find or reconstruct a singular tradition and are loathe to incorporate elements that they see as outside their cultural/religious boundaries. Today, many modern Pagans (myself included) fall somewhere in between these two poles. So I found it interesting that Pagan author Amber K seemed to take a shot at Pagans with a traditional bent in a recent article on Yule. "People drawn to paganism tend to be "spiritual mavericks" because it's a religion that is open to incorporating many beliefs, she said.
