Very Lucky or Unlucky? (Jan 31 2007 16:58 GMT) - I was just in the kitchen at work making more coffee. I had just poured myself a cup, but decided to make more before I put my cream in it. I was standing at the sink when the flourescent light fixture (4 feet long) came crashing down right in front of the fridge just three feet away from me! There was a loud POP, FIZZ, CRASH! and the whole thing was on the floor. |

Smarts = Efficiency (Jan 31 2007 16:53 GMT) - This is relatively old news but I’m fond of it because it is so darned clever. Who knew gas pipelines had step-down (they call them “letdown”) stations like electricity does? |

Syria dictating Hezbollah's conditions in Lebanon (Jan 31 2007 16:50 GMT) - Beirut - Lebanese Parliamentarian Wael Abu Faour disclosed the conditions dictated by Syria for Hezbollah to settle on their ongoing campaign to overthrow the democratically elected government. Abu Faour said Wednesday that Iranian negotiator Ali Larijani has relayed to Arab mediators five Syrian conditions that prevent any settlement to the ongoing Crisis in Lebanon. The conditions set by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, according to Abu Faour, are: the formation of a new 30-seat government in which the Hizbullah-led opposition controls 11 seats, allowing it to veto decisions. The Syrian conditions also include the adoption of a new elections law in three months, early parliamentary elections in six months, rejection of early presidential elections, and rejection of any attempt to form an international tribunal to try suspects in the 2005 assassination of ex-Premier Rafik Hariri and related crimes prior to completion of the international investigation in these atrocities. |

This Film Is Not Yet Rated (Jan 31 2007 16:45 GMT) - Recommended It's been said that the hardest part about making a movie comes after the cameras stop rolling, during the long and frustrating journey from the cutting room to the box office. We're given a sharp reminder of this theory during Kirby Dick's scathing documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated (2006), straight from the mouths of those who constantly fight to keep their beloved films from getting drawn and quartered by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). With such an ambiguous name---not to mention the company's insistence that its long-standing ratings system has been maintained by parents, for parents---you'd think that the MPAA was all about playing fair. Not so, says Kirby and his band of outsiders. Armed with claims of unfair bias against females, the gay community, indep... |
