Microsoft's top three Vista security features (Jan 31 2007 22:02 GMT) - (InfoWorld) - Microsoft finally rolled its Vista operating system out the door Tuesday, billing it as its most secure operating system ever, but what are the security features that will really matter to enterprise users? Now revealed! Secrets of line spacing in OpenOffice.org Writer (Jan 31 2007 22:01 GMT) - The fact that OpenOffice.org Writer is more than a word processor is an open secret. Designed to write long documents, Writer is in many ways a document processor comparable to FrameMaker, suitable for designing books and dissertations while falling short of a complete desktop publishing solution. For this reason, it includes a number of tools for tweaking lines of text, including Tools > Language > Hyphenation and the tools for adjusting character width and letter space for individual characters. However, by far the least understood of these high-end tools is Writer's ability to adjust line-spacing. |

His mom, Patti Santangelo, was sued by the RIAA in 2005 and refused to settle. She took her case public and became a hero to DRM hating nerds everywhere. And the RIAA, stupid idiots, went ahead and sued her kid. |

Looking At The Look Book: Bess and Kaia Abraham Are Both Dressed Like Children (Jan 31 2007 22:00 GMT) - We have to admit, we don't automatically abhor Bess Abraham. Sorry! Look, we jumped to conclusions when we read that she was a jewelry designer, which is usually code for "my husband makes the money" (see also: preschool teacher, useless shit boutique-owner). But it turns out that Bess's husband is also a jewelry designer, which makes her sort of cool. |

Mac Users Can Now Apply for US Government Grants (Jan 31 2007 22:00 GMT) - Filed under: Software, Odds and endsNeedless to say, stories of government incompetence are hardly new, but it seems particularly galling that when the federal government first set up the centralized Grants.gov website for grant applications back in 2005, it did not support Macs. It required a proprietary client, which was PC only. Now MacResearch is reporting that Uncle Sam has finally shaped up enough to offer a Mac PureEdge Viewer client (which comes in both PPC and Intel flavors). |
