"Messages from God" must come down from woman's roof (Feb 28 2007 22:59 GMT) - David Pescovitz: Estrella Benavides of San Mateo, CA will face fines or jail if she refuses to cover up signs she painted all over her house describing a government conspiracy and her unusual opinions on a variety of other matters. According to the San Mateo City Council, the signs violate city codes. From a San Francisco Chronicle article published before last week's ruling that the signs have to go: Benavides, a 48-year-old woman who lives alone in her yellow house on Cottage Grove Avenue, began painting the giant messages about a year ago, about the time her husband moved out and she lost custody of her son. |

Zune firmware update 1.3 due for mid-March (Feb 28 2007 22:59 GMT) - Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video It takes a certain amount of spirit to be a Zune user in the first place, so when the few, the proud discovered odd bugs in their precious "social" DAPs, and then learned that Microsoft was not only not fixing these problems, but not even confirming a fix was in the works, you can imagine the outcry was rather vocal. Well, the Zune Insider blog has finally spoken up on the subject, and is promising a 1.3 firmware update around March 20th to fix the most obvious of problems, such as Zune Marketplace content skipping, FM tuner battery drainage, and syncing hassles. Unfortunately, the other vocal half of the social, the ones with few bugs, but a whole lot of feature requests, is going to get shafted with this update -- still no wireless syncing, still no podcasting, still no transmogrifier. |

Apps not 'certified' for Vista may still work on the OS (Feb 28 2007 22:57 GMT) - (InfoWorld) - Although some widely used applications from top software vendors haven't been certified for use with Windows Vista, they may nonetheless work with the Microsoft OS. Major applications from Symantec, Adobe Systems, Apple, and IBM aren't included on an official Microsoft list of applications that qualify for a "Certified for Windows Vista" or "Works with Windows Vista" logo. However, chances are they could currently be involved in the testing process to achieve those logos, Microsoft and its partners said. That's the case with Symantec's security products, according to a company spokesman. Though Symantec's software is not listed on the site as having achieved either of those designations, company spokesman Mike Bradshaw said Wednesday that Symantec's Norton 360, Norton Antivirus, and Norton Internet Security are already compatible with Vista. |

In Home Networking: HomePNA - Why AT&T chose HomePNA for U-Verse (Feb 28 2007 22:55 GMT) - Verizon uses 270Mbps capable Multimedia Over Coax Alliance (MOCA) technology for the in-home networking portion of Fios installs. The standard allows them to avoid running Cat-5 and instead cut install costs by using existing Coax. AT&T started using MOCA for "Project Lightspeed" and U-Verse installs but then shifted to Home Phoneline Networking Alliance (HomePNA) technology. HomePNA allows for the use of either coax or traditional copper phone lines for home networking. Infoworld notes version 3. |
