Going against the flow (Mar 25 2007 15:40 GMT) - One particular flavor of dementia may be linked to vasectomy: A recent study by Northwestern University researchers revealed that men with a rare kind of dementia are more likely to have had a vasectomy than those who do not have cognitive problems. Called Primary Progressive Aphasia, or PPA, this dementia affects an individual's ability to express himself, impairing word recall and ability to understand words. The research was published in Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology. Current theory: |

The Mexican Goat Roast (Mar 25 2007 15:40 GMT) - In the mountains of Mexico the villagers gather and celebrate together on births, on weddings and funerals, high days and happy days. They celebrate with blue corn tortillas, mashed beans, chicken. For the main meal, however, there is the goat, Mexican roast goat. Eating it might be half the battle, with its strong gamy taste. The other half, as GI Joe knew, is knowing how it got there. |

In retrospect, "Light Jazz" was not such a good choice. (Mar 25 2007 15:40 GMT) - It turns out an MRI is like a colonoscopy; Everyone's had one, but no one talks about it. I got one yesterday on my left knee (an MRI, not a colonoscopy). I've been having pain there off and on (mostly on) for the last 10 years. About 4 months ago I decided to actually do something about it and saw an orthopedic surgeon. |

Constitutional Crisis In A Nuclear State (Mar 25 2007 15:40 GMT) - Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has dismissed Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, alleging that he misused his office. While the government officially denies it, Chaudhry has been placed under house arrest, surrounded by a police barricade to prevent visitors: "You cannot stop us from entering the residence of Iftikhar Chaudhry," (Qazi Hussain Ahmed, President of the Islamist opposition alliance Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal) told police, and then crossed the barricade. The situation forced the police personnel to call reinforcement to foil the attempt of the opposition leaders. Chaudry's "misuse of office" was to investigate the disappearances of four hundred people, many of them human rights workers, who were arrested since the War on Terrorism began, as well as to prevent the sale of a government-run steel mill and the conversion of a public park in Islamabad to a privately-run mini golf club. |

Is death a human right? (Mar 25 2007 15:40 GMT) - Suppose a person of reasonable mental competence decides, after carefully weighing the available options and consulting with those around him, that life is no longer worth living. Should that person have the legal right to end their own life? Suicide (and assisting suicide) is presently illegal in most western nations, a fact which only serves to make it slightly difficult for suicidal people to carry out their wish. I propose a different approach - in fact, an opposite approach. I propose that anyone who honestly wishes to terminate their own life should be provided with the means to do so humanely, reminiscent of (though perhaps more gentle than) the infamous suicide booths popularized by Futurama. |

China's Nuclear Threat, or How I Learned to Love the Bomb and STFU (Mar 25 2007 15:40 GMT) - This past Sunday the Washington Post ran a piece on the possibility of a nuclear war with China. To my knowledge it's the first to appear in such an auspicious publication, so I'll quote it at length:Given China's appetites and our alliances and interests, a war is not inconceivable in Taiwan, or in Korea. To remove American nuclear escalation from the equation, China would need not parity but only a deterrent such as it has long possessed. The Chinese, however, whose nuclear thresholds are dissimilar to ours, would have other options. |

The Sights and Sounds of the `30s (Mar 25 2007 15:40 GMT) - The stock market crash of 1929 brought the end of wonderful nonsense and the jazz age of the Roaring Twenties. A very different world now lay ahead in the years called "The Great Depression." |

Community Doesn't Scale: Why k5 Is Perpetually Dying (Mar 25 2007 15:40 GMT) - Can't sleep. Dried sinuses are nature's way of making you suffer needlessly. You can only struggle so long before beginning to question the fundamentals. Of course, those are stupid questions, so instead you get out bed, rip music from a very old computer game, and question the nature of the online forum. Yes, I write in a highly unnecessary narrative voice. |

The DVD Shelf--The Departed (2006) (Mar 25 2007 15:40 GMT) - When it comes to getting Oscars, Martin Scorsese is one of the unluckiest men in Hollywood. As we approach the 79th Annual Academy Awards this Sunday, the big question is "will his luck change?" This year, he is heavily favored to take home the Best Director Oscar, but an upset isn't out of the question. Martin Scorsese has been down this road before and always lost. The real question is, does it matter? |

Black Forest Cherry Pie (Mar 25 2007 15:40 GMT) - John woke up when the patch of sunlight, which had been moving across the floor for an hour or so, reached his face. Beside him, sharing the sleeping bag, Katja was still sleeping. Katja's friend, Maria, whose room it was, had got up but was still in her pyjamas. When she turned towards him, John closed his eyes again, pretending to be asleep. When Maria went into the shower, John turned onto his side and hugged Katja, thereby prodding her unsubtly and waking her up. |

Crime Detective Story Part 4 (Mar 25 2007 15:40 GMT) - Crime. Crime its in the streets. My name is Detective Frank Franklin and I'm that thin blue line that separates decent law abiding citizens against criminals who commit crime. This is my story. I was driving my police car home after a long weekend of police work. |
