A Conversation at MIT (Apr 10 2007 21:24 GMT) - I spent the day today at MIT where, thanks to the generous welcome offered by Phil Long, I visited OCW and the Media Lab, among other things, and engaged in this conversation with a number of the people at the University. I began describing the properties of successful networks, and from there we wandered through Edu_RSS, topics, tagging, resource profiles and more. I really enjoyed my visit today and, on listening again to the recording, think you'll enjoy this recording. The link is to the MP3 file. Stephen Downes, Stephen's Web, April 10, 2007 [Tags: |

RainbowPUSH Rally (Apr 10 2007 21:24 GMT) - I went to a rally in DC outside the MSNBC studios organized by Reverand Jackson's Rainbow PUSH coalition. There were a bunch of rallies, including one in Chicago where Jackson spoke. It was an interesting group, with a few media reformers, some African-American clergy, an American Federation of Teachers representative, and various African-American civil rights leaders. |

Similarity searches accelerate P2P downloads by 30-70% (Apr 10 2007 21:23 GMT) - I know you've all searched for a file, only to see it be displayed over and over in a P2P client's search results. The file name or description may be different, but you can see the file is the same because of the size or some other element. Now imagine being able to downloading your file by connecting to everyone who has the same (more or less) file. The limitation of P2P file sharing is of course the number of active users that have the file in question. A research team with members at Carnegie Mellon, Purdue, and Intel claims they can increase P2P speeds by 30-70% by using what they call Similarity-Enhanced Transfer (SET), by acknowledging that many of the files being shared contain pieces of identical data. |

Spock Opening New Privacy Debate? (Apr 10 2007 21:22 GMT) - Last night in the hallway I heard about Spock, a new personal search service that will get turned on next week at the Web 2.0 Expo. I heard that TechCrunch will have a preview of the service soon, maybe even later today. But, the person telling me this was alarmed at how much easier it was to troll through someone’s personal history than it is on Google or other search engines. |

China sets out to curb kids' online gaming (Apr 10 2007 21:22 GMT) - Filed under: GamingIt looks like China's not content to simply wait for over-eager gamers to find their way to a halfway house, with the government now taking some steps to curb the amount of online gaming kids partake in. It's not imposing a strict limit, however, instead forcing game makers to install so-called "anti-addiction software" in their games, which would ramp up in-game penalties if gamers play more than the government deems to be healthy. Apparently, gamers will only get half the normal amount points if they play more than three hours, with no points awarded at all after the five hour mark. At that point, they'll be presented with the ominous message: |

Wet Diaper Alarm Excuses Your Inability to be a Good Parent (Apr 10 2007 21:20 GMT) - A good parent prefers that their kid doesn't hang out with pants full of urine and feces all day, but changing the diaper can be a difficult task if you are particularly lazy and not keen on smelling your child's ass every 15 minutes. This is where there wet diaper alarm steps in. This toy has an included CMOS chip alarm. Once the alarm notices sogginess in the drawers an alarm goes off. I think the most difficult task would be ensuring the kiddo doesn't drop the toy. |

Court: There's No First Amendment Exception In MySpace (Apr 10 2007 21:14 GMT) - Just in case there was any confusion about the matter, a court in Indiana has ruled that the First Amendment applies inside of MySpace just as it does everywhere else. Apparently there was actually some debate about this seemingly obvious question after a court gave a middle school student probation for posting an "expletive-laden" critique of her school's policies on MySpace. In reversing that sentence, the appellate court noted its abhorrence of the student's language, but agreed nonetheless that it was protected. It's really hard to fathom the initial court's reasoning. There's nothing in the law to suggest that students have any less of a right to free speech than anyone else, and there's no reason to think that postings on MySpace would make things any different. |
