Year of the Nail (Ano Uno) (Apr 10 2007 23:07 GMT) - Web Exclusive: The serious artistic drive to meld fine photography with cinema is married to a charming tale of young almost-love in Jonas Cuaron's sweet and memorable debut, "Year of the Nail." The Cuaron filmmaking empire -- including brothers Alfonso and Carlos -- has expanded with Jonas, Alfonso's son, whose still black-and-white photos eventually morphed into current pic, easily the freshest Mexican preem at this year's Guadalajara fest. Distribs and fests looking for new voices should come a courting. |

Stealth (Comme Des Voleurs) (Apr 10 2007 23:07 GMT) - Web Exclusive: It is nearly impossible to separate the narcissistic from the deliberately disingenuous in Lionel Bayer's self-starring sophomore outing, "Stealth." His first feature, provocatively titled "Stupid Boy," already begged questions of intentionality. Here the intrepid Swiss helmer-hero embarks on a ludicrous voyage of self-discovery that leads him to Poland in search of his roots. Definitely not to everyone's taste with its fey whimsy, uncomfortable candor and half-validated idiocy, pic nevertheless possesses a loopy, somewhat creepy charm, aided immeasurably by Baier's wise choice of "Stupid" star Natacha Koutchoumov as the protag's sibling co-adventurer. |

Countdown (Il sera une fois) (Apr 10 2007 23:07 GMT) - Web Exclusive: It is a testament to Sandrine Veysset's power as as filmmaker that even when a project goes as far off the rails as "Countdown," either because of internal conceptual flaws or the suicide of producer Humbert Balsan, the result is still so compelling. Veysset's hallmark tropes -- troubled children, half-mad parents, a haunted countryside -- are fully functional here, but sidetracked by a time-travel notion more suited to Raul Ruiz's detached whimsy than Veysset's dark ruralism. Gallic helmer, whose audience popularity has declined steadily since her debut "Will It Snow at Christmas?," seems unlikely to gain ground whenever legal complications allow film's release. |

Republicans Cracking on Ending the War (Apr 10 2007 23:01 GMT) - To follow on Jonathan's earlier post about Republicans on the war, here's a good article on how the Republicans are feeling pressure to end the war and abandon Bush. A diverse collection of House Republicans has formed an ad hoc group to negotiate with the White House on a compromise Iraq spending bill, Politico's Ryan Grim reports. The group plans to hold talks with National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley, who has been working behind the scenes to cement opposition among Republicans to the spending bill that would require U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq at some point. |
