- We've long known that Colorado would be one of the most difficult Senate seats for the Republicans to hold in 2008. Even before incumbent Republican Senator Wayne Allard announced back in January that he would not run for reelection, the general trends in the state -- Democrats picking up a Senate seat, the governorship, two congressional seats and both houses of the state legislature, for instance -- indicated that Colorado would be ripe territory for the Democrats this cycle regardless of whether or not Allard sought another term. As it so happened, Colorado Republicans were unable to recruit their favored candidate for the race and instead were forced to settle on former Congressman Bob Schaffer, a far right conservative who was best known recently for having lost a Senate primary in 2004. On the other hand, the Democrats were able to recruit their favored candidate, popular Congressman Mark Udall (a Republican poll from 2003 showed Coloradans then viewed Udall favorably by a 36 percent to 12 percent margin). Not only does Udall seem to be generally more attractive of a candidate than Schaffer, he has a rather large financial lead at this point, with $2. |
